Progress in Smithfield TWP Monroe County
At last night's supervisors' meeting, an agenda item striking the word "possession" from the signs at township parks was passed unanimously. I was not responsible for getting the item on the agenda but happened to be at the meeting.
The signs had read "possession, use and discharge of firearms is prohibited in the park". The solicitor advised against passing the measure as he did not know of the state preemption law and thought it reasonable that they could make their own laws regarding firearms in the parks. I was able to speak up and site the state law (one of the three supervisors was aware of the law but a bit confused), and the measure was passed unanimously.
A small win for PA firearms owners.

good news...
Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

Unfortunately, and based on personal experience, I believe that most municipal solicitors are woefully unaware of subjects such as preemption.
It is our job, as citizens, to educate them whenever possible.

Chestnuthill Township has the same law on the books for their parks.I told them a while back it was not legal that they can regulate discharge but not legal possession. They said they would look into it. I`ve carried there and at every supervisors meeting and have never even gotten a second look.
Once the Smithfield minutes go on line I`ll print then and show our supervisors the vote.
