Long Gun Bill Of Sale / Private Background Check...

Has anyone here every conducted a background check on someone before they sold a long gun to them via Bill Of Sale?

I know alot of people prefer someone to have a valid PA DL and PA LTCF. But, if they do not have a valid PA LTCF and refuse to go through a FFL, have you ever done your own background check on them to know they are legal to own the long gun you have for sale?

Long story short...

I have (had) someone interested in a long gun I have for sale. He said he has a PA DL but no PA LTCF or any out of state CCW. Sends me a copy of his PA DL but it's expired. Ask him to send me a updated copy. Says he will tomorrow. Then tells me something came up and he has to back out of the sale. --- I kept getting a strange feeling during the emails.

Anyone else ever have something like this happen? Or am I just paranoid?

I wouldn't spend any money on a background check, but I would certainly check the name against the PA court records and even google it to see if anything interesting comes up.

buy anyway, was it a black rifle or something that may be banned in a neighbor state? perhaps hes trying to pull a fast one and now lives in NJ or something. Good on you for doing some legwork though.

I've done many "transfers" via Bill Of Sale over the years to only PA residents who have showed me their PA DL and PA LTCF. This is the only person I've had give me any issues.

The only reason I asked him to email me a copy of his PA DL was because he said he didn't have a LTCF from PA or any other state. So, I wanted to confirm he was at least a PA resident before I bothered driving 45 minutes to meet him. But, I noticed his PA DL was expired by 2 years. And, when I said something to him, he said he was gonna send me an updated PA DL. But then all of a sudden something came up and he had to back out of the sale.

I'd rather not sell the gun then sell it to someone who isn't legally allowed to own it. Ya know?

Sounds like he's no longer a resident and was trying to conduct an illegal transfer. Probably lives in NJ or NY now and didn't want to bother with the hoops there.

It don't pass the smell test. I wouldn't do it, but it's your call.

Since he's backed out of the deal he's done you a favor. If anyone knowingly sent or showed me an expired license I'd immediately cancel the sale. Just too fishy.

Now, does anyone think I should leave him negative feedback here on the forum to let everyone else be aware? Or, should I just drop it and let everyone else who he tries to buy from worry about it?

I did a Google search of his screen name and he's on some porn dating sites, biker sites, traveling sites, other gun sites.
