    Default 30-06

I just bought my first -06 (Remington 700 bdl). What is a good general purpose round? There are so many out there to choose from. I have not hunted in years but wanted an -06 anyway. So, i just need something for shooting at the range, but, i'd also like something good enough for hunting bigger game if needed and for general shtf.

Remington "Core-Lokt" 180gr Pointed Soft-Points (PSP). They are cheap enough to use as general target ammo and effective enough to hunt with. This is why I like them. You can "Practice what you preach" and use your purpose/carry ammo as your range ammo. There are better .30-06 rounds, but this is certainly not a bad one. If you don't like that, try Winchester SilverTips.

This is also why I like to carry Federal 180gr Hydra-Shoks in my .40s&w. They aren't the latest and greatest, but I can afford to shoot a lot of them for practice.

My Remington 7600 likes 180gr Corelokt. I get decent groups 1.5" at 100 yds. Beats the hell out of my shoulder though.

    YMMV

Try the 150 GR corelokt ammo. THe 180s are more powerful but the 150 doesn't kill your shoulder. Also there isn't one animal in PA that will not die from a well praced 150gr projectile.

Well, I didn't mention it, but most of my experience with the Rem Core-Lokt 180s has been through a Remington 760 Gamemaster - the precursor to the 7600.

    I like a pump .30-06...

Would he have any issue shooting the Greek HXP from CMP?

That stuff should be just the right ammo for good practice, if you can find it at a decent price. Last Farm Show outing, I bought a can of it (192 rds) in Garand Clips for $135.00

Although loading, I liked 165 Sierra Spitzer SP's.

My uncle uses Federal Gold Match 168 gr SMK BTSP no wonder he is a terror with his 06 at the range and in the woods. got his biggest buck with that bullet , i am not sure the range but he said it about 250 yards out.

Yes. Fantastic for "practicing" and general blasting some around. But, you must practice with the ammo you intend to use for the purpose of the rifle.

I have a reputation amongst our hunting party as a "decent shot". I usually end up doing all of the final adjustments and "sighting in" of the rifles in our hunting party. Being that it's deer season next week and bear just ended, I did this last weekend. I sighted in my Rem 760 .30-06, my father's Rem 700 .30-06, my brother's friend's Mossberg .30-06, my middle brother's Savage .270, my youngest brother's 7mm-08, and our asshole relative's .243. So, sufficient to say I've shot some rifles recently.

A few in our group suggested, "shoot these for me but check out my ultra-bad huting ammo...." Uhhh? what? Your want me to zero in you rifle, but you plan to use it with different ammo??

    Practice what you preach.

If you can't afford or choose not to practice/sight-in with your "purpose" ammo, do not expect your "purpose ammo" to land where you're aiming it.

I agree, I hunt with 150gr in my .308. I just seem to shoot the 180's better out of my 30-06.
