Re: Deer rifles.
My rookie year.
No luck last month with my Hawken flintlock.
Going Thurs Fri Sat next week near Lake Waalenpaupack (the Route 6 SGL), I will bring my Winchester 94 in 30-30 and my Remington 788 in .308 as a backup.
I also have doe tags for 5c where I will use the Hawken or my Remington 1100 later.

Re: Deer rifles.
I'm still trying to decide, Savage 99 in 358 Win, Tang safety Ruger in 270, or borrow the son's (he's at college) Rem 700 in 30-06.

Re: Deer rifles.
I just got back from WV where I snagged a nice spike buck with the H&R Pardner pump 12 ga. With that Red Dot sight it's good to go out to 100 yds. Couldn't believe the groups I was getting with 1oz rifled slugs. Devastating hits with little blood shot meat. Might just stick with that.
Otherwise, I'll take the Ruger Redhawk so I can have less bulk. First day I'll be concetrating of filming my son get one if the chance comes, so the gun is ancillary for me.
A note on the expansion of pistol rounds. I"ve taken many deer over the years with the Redhawk using 240 gr. HP Sierras or Hornady's, over either 2400 or the current 24 gr of Win 296. I have never retrieved a slug yet, shooting right through them no matter what the angle or what the bullet impacts on the way through. In an attempt to deliver more energy on target, some years back I switched to Gold Dot HP 240 gr. hoping to see some evidence they are actually opening up. First deer I shot went right through the boiler room at 30 yds and clipped the opposite leg bone on the way out, leaving a perfect half-moon nick as evidence. So, expansion is not a guarantee no matter what you use. Not sure what to do to get them to open up, but the truth is, it doesn't really matter if you put the shot where it needs to be. I haven't lost one yet. I hit one high in the right front and exited low in the left rear once. The bullet traversed almost three feet of deer and still kept on trucking. Ugly gut, though. I don't recommend that angle.

Re: Deer rifles.
I'll be taking both my Marlin 336 .35Rem and my Ruger American Predator .308 out. I'll be using one, my brother will be using the other.
Sidenote: .35Rem is a pain to find.

Re: Deer rifles.
Monday after work for about an hour with the CVA Optima Pro Inline with a Hornady 250 Grain SST over two pellets of 777 Magnums. 150 yard max
Tuesday-Friday 300 Blackout suppressed with a 194 grain Lehigh Max Expansion. 50-75 yard max.
Saturday- Depending where I hunt. Either the inline or possibly a .270 with a 130 grain Speer over 57 Grs, of H-4831
Would really enjoy hunting with the S&W 629 in 44 mag.

Re: Deer rifles.
I put a Mojo rear peep site on my K31 and picked up a box of Hornady soft points. I'd like to shoot a deer with it at some point, but I haven't had it to the range since putting the rear sight on or tried the ammo.

Re: Deer rifles.
I was undecided on what to take in the morning, I had my 30-06 dialed in fairly well, and honestly was still working the trigger on my Remington 270 ADL, so it was in parts until about 9 PM last night. I really wanted wanted to take it instead of the 06. So I headed out today to check groups and my trigger enhancement at 100 yds. Shot two 130 grain, and they where about 1.5 right. Then tried the 150 grain, they where 1.5 low, and 1.5 left!, I gave the scope 6 clicks up and 6 clicks right and shot it again. I'm going to use the 270 after all.

Re: Deer rifles.
My primary choice of rifle is my Remington 700 ADL chambered in .270win Nikon pro staff 3-9X40. 130gr Winchester Power Max best accuracy.
I also have a Winchester 94 30-30 post 1992 production with a Bushnell 4X 150gr Hornady Leverlution best accuracy.
My 3rd rifle I keep tuned in is my Winchester Model 70 Featherlite .243win. Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 4-12X40. 100gr Federal Power Shock best accuaracy. (This is my current woodchuck slayer till I can spend some money on another caliber)
I would like to begin testing some handloads for the .270 and the .243 but I do not have dies for either cartridge yet. I just started to dabble in the handload hobby last year.Muzzel Down Range, Eyes On Target...

Re: Deer rifles.
Just got back from Wicens. I added a 3-9x40 scope to my Remington 870 Police (1980, 20" smoothbore IC with rifle sights). Shooting Remington Sluggers I was getting 3" groups at 50 yards, 4.5" at 75 yards. Took aim at a small clay target up on the berm at 100 yards, blasted it with the first shot (but missed a few others).

Re: Deer rifles.
