Re: The Appleseed Project
Tom, I have registered for the Palmerton shoot, Sept. 11 & 12.
Looking forward to having an Appleseed event local.
The NY Times article is clearly a hit piece....well, it is the NY Times after all. The reply from Appleseed was well written but perhaps a little to gentle.
It would be nice if one day the press came to understand the values they so cherish in the 1st Amendment apply equally to the 2nd and all others. And that we cannot blithely select the rights we will support only to disregard others. Our freedoms are a package deal.
Hope to see you next month in Palmerton.
Best,
K.

Re: The Appleseed Project
I just joined the FB page. I think I may have convinced the Mrs to allow me to attend the Manheim event in October. we could make a family weekend out of it...staying at the campground next door.
Daughter #1 and I would participate. Is it possible that we use the same rifle? I'm guessing everybody doesn't shoot at the same time?

Re: The Appleseed Project
mrjam2jab,
Thanks for posting that article. It is thorough and covers all of the basics of how to make your Appleseed experience most enjoyable.
A couple of comments; bring extra ammo. 500+ minimum. 4 each, ten round magazines is best to keep things running smoothly and timely. The Ruger 10/.22 is most commonly used and a very good rifle to train with. Another option that I saw at the last Appleseed I attended is AR-.22 conversion. Seems like that could be a good way to train if you like the AR platform. Again just bring plenty of extra magazine.
Probably the most important thing is to bring a teachable attitude. Even a seasoned rifle shooter can learn to hone his/her skills with the coaching from the volunteers at Appleseed.

Re: The Appleseed Project
4 mags?....hmmm....looks like I'm going to have to pick up a couple more. The rifle I have only came with 1 10-round and 1 5-round magazine.
500+ rounds of ammo....looks like I'll also be buying 2-3 more (550) boxes at Walmart...enough to cover myself and my daughter.
Neither of us are even close to "seasoned"....as we both fired a rifle for first time 2 weeks ago....so open minds you'll get.
ETA: Oh, and a sling too. Our rifle doesn't have one...Last edited by mrjam2jab; August 15th, 2010 at 08:15 PM.
