What would be your first choice to defend your family's life?

My first option is my G30 which I keep beside my bed while sleeping, now if I had the chance to make it to my safe my choice would be one of my loaded AR's.

We keep my S&W K-38, 1911, Redhawk and 12ga as well as her Charter Arms Pinklady handy all through the house. If I had time to prepare instead of just reacting, I'd grab the 1911 to make sure I can get to the 12ga. Other than that it's whatever is closer. My favorite is the 12 ga loaded with S&B 12 pellet per shell 00buck. I think that will seriously lay an ass whooping on anyone who wants to come into my house and do my family harm.

Winchester SX3 is faster....... My customized Remington 1100 will shoot 8 rounds in about 2 seconds, but the Win SX3 has been documented to shoot 12 rounds in an incredible 1.44 seconds. At this time that is as fast as it gets.

Me and my wife we work as a team Me with the 12 gauge and her with the Glock 19 0r one of the 1911s.

If we both brandish pistols I'd go with my PX4 in 45acp and she probably go with G19 or 1911.

You are correct & I stand corrected but it's still one dam fast shotgun & it's only several thousand's slower than the winchester, so i still dam happy because it's already faster than most of us could never match how fast Patrick Flanigan fires or Tom Napp. It's faster than I can pull the trigger. But I concead to being corrected Sir I'm actually happy you brought that to my attention so I don't make the same mistake again

There are much better choices of ammunition for HD, or even self defense in general than 62gr with a steel penetrator. It's meant to increase penetration, which it does at the expense of wounding potential on squishy humans without armor on.


Either go way heavier if your weapon will shoot it, or something polymer tipped AMAX/VMAX, HP etc. Look at hunting loads that maximize wounding potential. You are not bound by military regulations or treaties to use ball ammunition. And it's hardly the best performer for actually incapacitating an attacker ASAP.

Would you also use FMJ 9mm for self defense or would you use a proven performing HP? Same rules apply. And that's the beauty of .223/5.56. The commercial market is full of good options that cover these needs extremely well. And remember, it's not .45, or .308 etc. If that round doesn't tumble, or expand, or hit something vital, or if the magic hydrostatic shock fairy doesn't rupture something important. All they are going to have is a .22 caliber hole in them. So if it's NOT in a vital place. It might not stop the fight.

By all means, use what you feel the most confident in, but if you do some research I doubt you'll still arrive at that choice.

Definitely the last 5.56 ammo I'd use for for home defense is M855 green tip (or M193's either). Home defense I'd have a good SP round or similar. Like the mag of .30 Car HP's I keep on hand for one of my M1 Carbines. Not going to use FMJ's in it for Home defense ammo.
