Re: Open Carry Holster Suggestions
I'm not the regular serpa hater... most are caught up in the illusion that the release mechanism will result in negligent discharges. I bullshit to that.
That said, having used a serpa in FoF training, I found that the weapon gets stuck in the holster when the user is trying to draw at emergency speed. When I first got the serpa, I did hundreds of dry-fire practice draws in the basement, as quickly as I could. I wanted to be fast, and in that circumstance, the holster did not disappoint. I was able to get very fast and efficient draws from the serpa without a single issue.
Then presented with the stress of force on force training, and the visceral impluse to 'really' go as fast as I can... It's too easy to begin the draw before pressing the serpa release button. When that happens, the pressure on the retention mechanism effectively locks the button, and the weapon is stuck until downward pressure is applied to the gun, then the button is attempted again... precious moments...
That said, I am not saying any retention holster is better or worse... but, I wish I would have known about the issue, and would not have if not for having the opportunity to pressure test it numerous times. I was a serpa fan-boy, and I tried to adapt past the limitation, but it proved to be problematic time and time again. I would only use a serpa if the pistol was a tertiary weapon.
