And that's always entertaining. Now the real question is which range do you go on when you're shooting shotgun shells out of a hand gun? The Shotgun range? or the pistol range?

I have a 44 special that also shoots 44 magnums!!!!!!

There are older 38 and 44 special revolvers that were made before the magnums and have no shoulder cut in the chamber to prevent loading with magnums. There was no need as there were no magnums.

I have seen older 38 specials where the shoulder in the chamber has worn and if it has worn enough and the 357 brass is sized down to minimum dimensions, the 357s will chamber if the OAL is short enough.

There are also cheap 38 specials out there that don't have shoulders cut and 357s will fit if the OAL is short enough.

To shoot magnums in any of these guns is foolish and you stand the chance of turning your revolver into a genade. Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had a lady give me a .357 Mag. snub, it turned out to be a saturday night special with the bored through cylinders. Contrary to the norm this guy was lucky that he did not try his HD gun and ammo. It was loaded with Winchester 357 Mag. 158 gr hollowpoints.

Only if the cylinder was made for that, such as the Taurus Judge. Also, for clarification, it is a .45 Colt, there is no cartridge called .45 Long Colt although it is a common term sometimes used to differentiate between a .45 ACP and a .45 Colt revolver. Many times when someone says they have a Colt 45 they are talking about the ACP, not a SA revolver that shoots .45 Colt. I know I cannot shoot 410's out of my Ruger Blackhawk that is chambered for .45 Colt as the cylinder is not long enough.

Pre 1910ish .45 Colt Govt is shorter than post 1910ish .45 Colt, hence the long and short monikers.

I have read that the term long came about to describe the "newer" Colt ammo.
And remember, Colt did have .32 long and Short as well as .38 Long and Short.

But anyway, I do have a Russian revolver that fires .32 H&R mags, and some weird 7.62 Russian cartridge as well....

In my .357's I usually shoot 38 specials at the range. It's cheaper and a constant diet of only .357 mags (IMO) can eventually damage the gun.

Aw crap thought that I had out grew that, always have seen a 3 and written a 6. My key punch operator used to just automatically try changing the 3's to 6's. Sorry for any confusion as there is no way for me to proof that goof. Please keep an eye on me and keep me straight.

    A couple of notes:
Also 45 long colt revolvers will shoot 410 shot shells.
Already been covered - there seems to be a lingering confusion about .410s and .45s. The smaller of the .410s is 2.5 inches long; the 45 Colt is nearly an inch shorter and so are normal .45 Colt chambers. The Judge is an exception.
Also, there was a reference earlier to .38 S&W being used in .357s. The bullets for the 38 S&W are a bit larger in diameter at 0.360" as opposed to 0.357". Evidently they will work but I wonder about leading (and, yes, the cost as mentioned).

Anyone know where I can get a box?

Surely your 9mm will fire 8mm ammo too
