I'm not understanding people that are recommending 10/22...providing the OP is planning on this hunting excursion in the state of PA.

    1) He's hunting out of season if he's going in August.

    2) He cannot hunt with a semi auto rifle in PA.

Some of you people really need to work on your reading comprehension skills.

My skills aren't that great I assure but here is what the guy wrote............

I have the good fortune of being a very healthy 73 year old. My 35 year old son and I are going to do some wilderness camping for two weeks in August. We will carry 3 days of dehydrated food to start off, but after that we will live off the land. As an old recon Marine, living off the land does not frighten me one bit. My son will carry bear spray, and I will load with 9mm Underwood Xtreme Penetrator. So we can deal with a bear. What we need is a gun for food.

Obviously, we are not going to kill, dress, and cook a deer. Squirrels, rabbits, snakes, and other small critters will be our targets for the next meal. So I am looking for a survival rifle, 22 LR RF. The Henry Ar-7 is very appealing because it breaks down with parts stored in the stock/receiver group.

I googled the topic and got so much to wade through that quit that effort.

If you can offer advice on a .22 RF LR that is as compact, I'd really appreciate hearing about it.

    Thanks in advance. ......................................

No where does he say where he will be going but for 2 weeks.
He could be going to alaska for all anyone here knows.
He refers to the ar-7 , a semi must be on his list for a gun for food gathering so.........
while my comprehension skills may not be great , I'm not putting words into anyone's mouth nor assuming more than the fella wrote.
    But that's just me.

Thank you to all who offered advice. I have decided to go with the Henry AR-7 since it seems to be the most compact option. My goal is to shoot a rodent like squirrel or rat to set a trap for a snake. If i can shoot a rabbit we will eat it. But a small rodent will attract a snake in short order, and from my recon days in Nam i know how to trap a tasty snake with small rodent bait. Worst come to worst one can always eat the small rodent.

I caught one in a minnow trap last summer.

As others have said, if you are camping in PA, squirrels are not in season in August. Good to go for groundhogs but need to be wearing an orange hat. Of course you have a hunting license. Sounds like fun.

Or it could be that our comprehension is just fine. The question asked involved which rifle to use and not "what are the seasons in which I can hunt".

Some of the posters in the thread had already pointed out the fact that PA did not have small game open at that time, so to point it out again would be redundant. Therefore, I addressed only the question which was asked.

If the OP decides to poach game, in spite of the warnings that he has recieved, that's on him. I'm neither his momma nor am I the Game Commission.
