I'm sure the investigation we won't hear about will determine the infection came from the people handling the cukes during picking and packing. They're shitting without washing their hands before returning to work. Always wash your produce before peeling it, there is a spray that you can clean it too. When you're buying produce, if the skin is punctured, don't buy that one, infection can be inside and no cleaning is going to resolve that.

Don't buy store sliced melons, lots of ways to get infected with them.

My wife, the chef, agrees completely with this well-worded post.

Especially washing the exterior and making sure the exterior is
not compromised in any way.
Apparently salmonella can get on the outside from handling and
bad animal-based (like pig manure) fertilizer.
