Are you talking the inside of the safe? Or the outside? If you don't care about esthetics, paint the safe with "Kilz". You can pick it up just about anywhere. Then paint it with the color of your choice.

Wash everything with vinegar (as said) and let air dry, EVERYTHING. You have to do every nook and cranny.
Get a spray bottle and spray everything and wipe it with a white paper towel so you can see whats comming off.
You may have to do it a few times, but it will cut the smell.
Don't paint it until you clean it or the smell will come out over time.

I didn't want to say this yesterday but here goes. Ozone. Put an ozone generator in there and leave the door cracked. A couple things to keep in mind:

    1. If you don't know what you are doing, don't let ozone near anything you wouldn't be willing to throw full-strength bleach on.

    2. Avoid human and pet exposure to the ozone gas.

If you want to get that serious, this will, without a doubt, solve your problem.

    EDIT:

    3. Don't use Ozone near ammunition, powder, or any flammable liquids.

Try Kanberra Gel. Those stuff works, I use them on my boat to get rid of mildew and fish smell stain in cabin, very easy to use, just open it and let it sit, close the door and forget about it. On the down side, it's costly but worth every penny.

my new truck (new to me) was owned by a cigar smoker, I used simple green. I wiped every part of the interior with it. Everything, headliner and all, I did this 3 times and some magic wafers no more cigar smell.. But I also had windows to open..

Might try simple green or maybe some charcoal, charcoal is supposed to eliminate odors..

The outside of the safe is good. I was able to clean that pretty easy. It seems the inside is having the trouble. Currently, I have a bowl of vinegar in the safe. I am giving it a few days to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't I will be trying some of the other recommendations listed here.

    Thanks for all the input

Try spraying Febreze in the safe.

I guess he left his safe door open all the time. I can't imagine how the smell is that bad in a safe that is only open when fetching your shootin irons.
Jimmy cracked corn and HE didn't care! Why should I?

Maybe you can try some rug cleaners designed to clean up "Pet Messes". Its designed as a pet odor eliminator. My dogs tend to have an accident now and then, we spray the carpet liberally then use a stiff carpet brush, it gets rid of the smells fast and our carpets look good. I'd imagine you can spray that on the inside panels and scrub them good with a stiff brush, might help and its pretty cheap. It seems to work better than febreeze in our house.
I'm faster than Doc Holliday (with Novocaine of course)
