Oh Country Life
Last night, my wife asked me to come upstairs while I sat at the computer on my favorite website. I'm thinking it may be time for a little romance although her tone would indicate otherwise.
I arrive in our bedroom on the third floor of the house. She informs me something is in the bathroom and it is bigger than a mouse. I'm thinking bat or bird, maybe squirrel. I turn the light on and much to my dismay, another black snake has entered the house.
I've had them in the basement, some have found their way to the main floor. I found one shed skin in the eaves a few years back. But never a live one on the third floor. As a former snake owner, they don't freak me out but my wife is a city girl and is not big on any critters in the house, especially snakes.
Now comes the fun. We have one of those extended grabber things. I'm hoping I can grab it and drop it in a plastic container. Grabber is not grabby enough and the snake slithers through it. Now it is pissed and striking at everything. Time to die. Machete is not sharp enough and I can't get a swing anyway. My wife suggest the air rifle. Success, one dead black snake. Now, in a few weeks, my wife will be able to sleep again.
This morning, as we prepare to take my son to a friend's house, I see big ripples on the far side of the pond. There is stirred up mud on the side closest to the house, about 50 feet away. As we walk out onto the deck, a black bear comes out of the brush where the ripples are. I grab the video camera from inside, too late.
The tracks in the mud around the pond are about 5 to 6 inches wide. A google search tells me that is a big bear, 500 lbs or so.
I wonder if it's passing through or may still be here come bear season.
I guess I'll take snakes in the house to have bears in the yard. Will the missus?Last edited by unclejumbo; July 31st, 2009 at 10:13 PM.

Re: Oh Country Life
Throw the bear a donut or two every week and come November I'll come up and take him off your hands. It's a long drive but I'll do it for a nice rug.

Re: Oh Country Life
yep, sounds like my place as well. Had a pheasant living out back for a month or so last year. Was pretty cool seeing him out there every morning. Plus the deer hanging out at the ponds. GF's dog tries to chase after them
Mmmmmm donutsssssssssss.....Courage is not the absence of fear but the mastery of it

Saw the bears a week ago. Three deer wake me up every night at about 2:30 AM and had 13 turkey today dog went crazy going after them. The Coon hasn't been around for a month. But the coyotes run the ravine every night. Rabbits are all over the place this year should have some for dinner after the first frost.
God I love my home

That would be cool to get some pics of that guy on a trail cam to see just how big it really is. Bear rug would be nice. Good luck!
