My Dad's M1A: take it now or wait til it's willed to me?
I planning on visiting my folks down south and it came up that I should take the M1a back with me. His view is that, "he can shoot his other guns."
I don't know...I have a few guitars but I don't think I could give away my favorite. Plus, I'd have to take all the reloading gear and then find an outdoor range to shoot it at.
What would y'all do?Do not shoot to kill...shoot to live.

This is an easy answer. Take it now. There is no way of knowing what the climate will be in the future. It would be a shame to loose a gun of that quality just because you waited.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

I would take it now. If something should happen to your father, it may not be there when you want to take it home. But the biggest thing to do is to talk to him and see if he really wants you to take it now or is he just being polite?
It may make him feel more comfortable knowing that you have it, the one that he really wants it to go to.

If your Dad wants you to take it, you should go with his wishes.
Never sell that rifle, BTW...it'll always be a remembrance of your Dad...Well, pushed 60 too hard so now I am the big SIX-OH. Now I can be a real pain in the ass! And, who says growin' old isn't fun!!

Yeah, take it now. You don't want it messed up on a will or estate or something, who knows what can happen between now and then and transferring it while he's alive would be infinitely easier then dealing with it after he's gone.
That is...if he has to transfer it to you based upon the state laws or whatever.
He wants you to take it now, take it now.

TAKE IT NOW! I kick myself for not taking my Grandfather's guns when he told me to. Now he and they are gone. You can alway bring it for him to shoot when you visit.

Take it now while he's around. If he wants you to have it IMO it's better to take possession while it's free and clear rather than after he passes and possibly having it held up in an estate settlement. Besides he may get satisfaction from seeing you enjoy it.

take it now, build a presentation box for it, and give it back to him in the box. tell him you dont want it until he is ready to give it to you, weather it be in passing or because he wants you to have it. if he wants to wait, then put it in writing and place the paper in the box.

Like others said, I would ask him if what he REALLY wants. If so, give him a big hug and a smile, and go shooting with him.
remember Murphy's Law, something could go wrong....you never know with estates, the closest families get insanely jealous sometimes....
and NEVER, EVER, sell it.....EVER
unless...of course......you wanna sell it me really cheap.......

Take it now.
Since you are not geographically close to him - they all will be gone by the time you get down there when the time comes. Any relative that is closer than you, will beat you back down there, and they will stand a good chance at taking out whatever they want - promised to you or anyone else.
My grandfather had several firearms that were supposed to come to my mother and father at his passing.
Since they were not geographically close to him, my cousins came in the day he passed in the confusion and took everything out that was worth anything (guns included). Pawned them all and claimed they had no knowledge of them.
