Does anyone use a lanyard?
I had a few pistols out the other day and my youngest asked what the loop was for and why some of my guns have them and others don't.
I knew what it was for but I have never used one, so now I'm curious if this is something I should consider training with.
An obvious pro would be not losing your sidearm, I would venture that a major con would be it getting in the way.
Just looking for some pros & cons from you guys that do use them...right, wrong or indifferent.

Re: Does anyone use a lanyard?
Been shooting guns for a long time, and have never seen one used. I believe they're a throwback to cavalry days.

Re: Does anyone use a lanyard?
After a few searches it seems like now days it's purely a tactical use.

Re: Does anyone use a lanyard?
Some Navy squadrons still had WWII Victory models as late as the early 80's that were rather crudely cut down to approx. 2 1/4 - 2-1/2 in barrels (Yes , they cut the ejector rod dent away!) to fit in the 'holster' pocket of survival vests. They were secured with a length of para-cord to a loop in the pocket and the lanyard loop. I also saw later 2in. Mod.10s that had the para-cod tied to the trigger guard!

If I'm near water probably...if I'm in water over my waist or on a boat/canoe/kayak, always. this was etched in our brain while in small inflatables, weapons always tethered to you some how. packs and gear especially radios always tied to the boat, no exceptions

A few times for watch , our 1911A1's were issued with lanyards hooked to the pistol , and the other end secured to the pistol belt.

The modern 'phone cord' lanyards are pretty cool.

Re: Does anyone use a lanyard?
I have some tokarev magazines with a lanyard loop... which I have not, nor will probably ever use.

I learned this the hard way. Lost a shotgun while goose hunting in a kayak.
My kid checking out my 1911's is how this started. I have a P89 and a couple of revolvers that also have a loop.
The phone cord type reminds me of being tethered to the kill switch on my dirt bike.
