Re: sks7.62-39
i think you have to remove the fixed magazine and then you can install the thirty round magazine. its been quite a few years since i messed with a sks (mag) someone here will chime in and help you on your way.

I don't have an SKS, but I have an AK.
I know that the mag on the SKS is fixed with a hinge, but I am not sure if you can just take it off and put a 30rd AK mag in it, without making any modifications....ZRT -SECTOR-7

You have to remove the fixed 10rd mag and the 30 should snap in. Not to hard but I tried 2 30rd mags on my russian sks and neither would feed right

Re: sks7.62-39
Thanks for the info. I got the clip on but it took me a little while. I had to take the old clip out. Then I had to put the 30 rounder in first then put the triger back in place. I didn't get to try it out yet because I hae to go to work.

Re: sks7.62-39
Seriously... its a "magazine"... "Magazine"!
Anyway, here is what you need to know. To remove the fixed 10 round box magazine, disassemble the rifle and remove the barreled action from the stock. Once you do that, you'll see how it all comes apart. Use the floor plate release lever to release the mag and it should essentially drop free. This lever will act as the mag release once you start using removable (30 rnd) magazines. Now, fully assemble the rifle minus the old fixed magazine. To insert and remove the new magazine, you must have the bolt in the open position. Pull the bolt back and use a finger to pull up on the bolt catch. This will hold the bolt open. Then, just insert the new magazine and you're set. Once you shoot out all 30 rnds, the bolt will hold itself open and you can drop the mag like any other gun.
If you have issues with your 30 round magazine, look into Tapco 20 rnd poly mags. I have those and they have zero issues and many people would share my same opinion that the vast majority of aftermarket 30 rnd SKS mags are crap. Getting one that works is hit or miss. Hopefully yours is a hit.
