Canvas will hold up longer, but is more difficult to wash should it become stained or discolored.

Re: Nylons Or Army Greens?
Are you looking for a sling, or a carrying strap? A real sling will help stabalize the weapon when you are in firing position, and the USGI makes are all leather. A carrying strap is a whole different ballgame...

What you just described is a carry strap, canvas or nylon will work fine for you. Find a source that describes the proper way to use a sling and get a good leather one like USGI. It is amazing how stable a good sling makes your shots when used properly.I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

^^^This...
Is exactly what you need to know. If the "sling" (term used loosly) is merely for carrying the weapon, then anything will do the job. However, if it also serves to stabalize your off hand, and make you more accurate when shooting unsupported, you definitely want the leather USGI. Not only will it maintain the military look, but it will make the weapon more functional.Oath Keeper, MMIX - Ad Infinitum

Re: Nylons Or Army Greens?
Yes they can, however; I have an old (1950's old) USGI sling that I know hadn't been oiled in the last...oh, 15 years? before I got my hands on it. Minor cracking but no dry rot. A light sheen of oil on the sling when I clean the weapon (presentation grade M1903) and it's good to go. They don't require much upkeep, and should last decades of hard use. Less than 5 minutes added to the maintainance time for a huge bonus in ease of use.

Re: Nylons Or Army Greens?
I picked up a M! Garand in the late 1980's or early 90's I bought a good military leather sling and put it on it. I have used the gun regularly after shooting it goes in the safe but I have not really done anything to the sling cleaned of some mud and dirt if needed I don't remember oiling it at all. Now that I think about it it time for 06 Springfield shootin.
