Default Storing a gun for someone

I have a question for you guys. I have a cousin in Virginia that owns a pistol. He currently has some roommates and isn't around all the time and is worried about his firearm. He asked if I would mind holding it for him until he gets his own place. I told him to wait until I checked the legality of it before I answered, if it's legal then no problem. I'm not sure about the Virginia laws, all I know is that his father owned it and when he passed away my cousin took possession of it. He would just bring it up with him on his next trip up this way. What do you guys think?

Wow, 100 views and only one reply which doesn't answer the question. Thought for sure I'd have an answer by now. I guess nobody knows.

I'm pretty sure you would have to have it transferred through an ffl since it is an out of state transfer. Even though it's only temporary. IANAL

He could just "loan" it to you, as long as you have a LTCF, right?

You cannot loan a gun of any sort between residents of different states, except for sporting purposes.

However if the owner of the gun delivers the gun in a locked box which only he has the key or combo there is no control AND custody. The guardian could then watch the box.

Does your cousin not want to shoot this firearm? Is he keeping the firearm as an heirloom? How long is your cousin going to be in these living conditions?

Either transfer the firearm to you (and remove any doubt), or put the firearm in a box.

I don't know if he's ever shot it, just keeps it because it was his dads. He probably just thinks I'd be a good person to care for it since I'm a gun guy. I bet it hasn't even been cleaned or oiled since his dad passed. Not sure how long it will be before he gets his own place, I guess real estate is pretty steep down there.

Not sure what he'll want to do at this point, either way it's going to cost him money that he doesn't have which could be avoided all together if it wasn't for all the stupid gun laws that protect no one. I could give it a nice, safe, loving home for free here in PA, lol.
