Default question about a FTF transfer

If I want to buy a rifle from someone what is required to happen. Do we both have to go to a gun shop to fill out paper work or do I just have to give him the cash and thats it? People are always talking about FTF transfers being very easy but I would think you would have to go to a gun shop or something to do some paper work? Please let me know.

If you are both Pa. residents there is no paperwork required.

The only Fed requirement is that the seller not have knowledge, or reason to believe that the buyer is a prohibited person.

thanks for the quick response. So all I need is the cash and we can transfer the gun like a pack of gum.

Right. Remember, gum goes in mouth, gun goes in hand.

Also I would have a bill of sale. There is a really good sticky under the classifieds that you should copy and fill out the blanks, keep a copy and give a copy to the other person.

A BOS is totally unneeded and is only per the seller's preference. I still maintain that paperless when doing FTF is best, especially from a buyer point of view.

Do you feel like it might scare the buyer off? I thought of that too, like its a contract, but I think I would still like to have one just in case.

don't know why it would scare off anybody and I never understood with the "just in case" thing. As Pa. Patriot correctly stated "only Fed requirement is that the seller not have knowledge, or reason to believe that the buyer is a prohibited person". If you have such knowledge or reason a BOS is of no use and barring any such knowledge or reason there is no "just in case". In case of what?

I dunno, say the buyer wanted to play gunsmith and messed something up, or something messes up in gun and the guy wants his money back.
