Police officer shot in North Philadelphia
According to Philadelphia Police, Officer Ashley Hoggard is a lucky man. That's because the bullet that missed his body armor entered soft tissue in his shoulder.
26-year-old Hoggard, a 3-year force veteran from the 39th Police District, was on patrol with his partner at 2:26 Sunday morning around Broad Street and Somerset Street in North Philadelphia.
Police say they heard shots coming from 13th Street and Somerset. Hoggard and his partner called for assistance and responded to the scene. There they saw a man firing a gun, there was an exchange of gunfire with the officers and Officer Hoggard was hit.
Hoggard's partner rushed him to Temple University Hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told reporters this morning, "Based on what we've been through: 1. we're relieved that the officer is in stable condition because we've had a very bad period of time that we've gone through where we've lost a lot of officers. But it's just one more example of the kind of crazy violence that takes place on the streets of our city. To have this many people shot and an individual just randomly shooting - wildly shooting I should say - on the street. [He] is a guy we need to get into custody."
Lt. Frank Venore described the shooter as a man in his mid 20's to mid 30's with facial hair, wearing a white tank top. The suspect may have fled in a grey/silver Pontiac Grand Prix.
There were three other men shot as well. All three were hospitalized and are also listed in stable condition.
Another fine day in Killadelphia.
