    Default Arc welding question

I need to weld (or securely and permanently affix) a bayonet lug on my AK. I do not feel confident in silver solder and would like something stronger that won't break during barrel heating or barrel torquing or whatever.

I just researched arc welding and it doesn't seem out of my reach. I will need to learn more but from what I gather I could probably get something for 50-100 and then get some gloves, mask, and rods and be on my way.

The job in question is extremely small so I am curious if arc welding would be dangerous to do on the barrel considering how thin it is...how would the chrome plating be affected?

Last, I may be misunderstanding but how is a welding machine (a small one) different from say a variable amp car battery charger? Could I use the battery charger to weld? It goes from 1 to 5 to 50 amps.

    Someone please enlighten me.

Arc welders are too powerful for the job at hand.

A TIG welder would be perfect, but I beleive a MIG would work if you used the proper wire and set the current low enough.

A gunsmith could silver solder it for you, and some may have TIG welders.

an arc welder is way to much for something like this as stated by p-11 tig would be the best option.but if you have someone who knows what they are doing a MIG will do just fine.this is not something you will want to do yourself if you are not an experienced welder.tack it from me iv been an ironworker for 13 years now and someone who dose not know what they are doing can screw things up in a hurry.

I would take it an experienced welder. Welding is somewhat of an art and takes a lot of practice to master.

hmmm, I thought it all sounded too easy. Its all the same, I don't want to ruin it but I thought I could save some bucks.

So should I look for a gunsmith or someone who just welds? Any idea on a cost estimate?

I have silver solder but it fails my stress tests, maybe I am not doing it right. Would epoxy, or jb weld work considering the heat involved from sustained fire?

True, and you'll be hard pressed to find a welder for a hundred bucks.

Plus all the sht you'll need for one job.

Take ti to a professional. It'll be WAY cheaper on the long run and chances are you'd just fuck up your AK if you did it yourself.

Welding seems simple enough when you're reading about it in a book, but it's tricky.
