Philly Classifies Dirt Bikes and ATVs as Illegal for Street Use
Quote:
In a unanimous vote on Thursday, Philadelphia City Council amended the traffic code to define dirt bikes and dune buggies as illegal vehicles. The change closes a loophole that prevented Philadelphia police from confiscating the vehicles, according to a release from Councilmember Alan Domb's office. Domb cosponsored the legislation with Councilmembers Mark Squilla and Derek Green.

What's funny is that 500 of the "bike life culture" types swarmed through the northwest part of the city (both sides of two lane roads) and converged at Broad & Lehigh this afternoon, in a massive group middle finger to the city government.
Try finding THAT on the news.

It is all about the dollars....and someone will get killed either from a motor vehicle accident or attempted traffic stop.
I do agree with a large park or riding area. The city has plenty of abandoned properties or can convert areas into a riding track and possibly charge for usage to help with maintenance cost.

You gotta be kidding? Did you think about that? Imagine the mayhem at such a place. What they need to do is decriminalize capping the bastards and make ownership of ATV's and dirt bikes illegal inside the city limits. Problem solved.
Re: Philly Classifies Dirt Bikes and ATVs as Illegal for Street Use
I don't understand. What 'loophole' are they closing?
If the bike isn't street legal, it's already illegal to ride on the street (duh). An ATV has also never been a street legal vehicle. I'd think that alone would have already been enough to impound them if caught on the street.
Banning ownership? Are you kidding? A Philly resident can't own an off-road vehicle, keep it in a garage, and trailer it to a location where it's legal to use it?
Sounds a lot like the argument about closing the 'gun show loophole.'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) * Mere days after a City Council-drive crackdown on dirt bikes, ATVs and dune buggies, Philadelphia police confiscated several on Saturday afternoon. Yet, late Saturday night, a train of mostly 500 mostly now illegal rides mobilized and meandered around Center City streets, a clear act of defiance in light of the new legislation.

Truncated news - they were ALL OVER the lower part of the city.

Re: Philly Classifies Dirt Bikes and ATVs as Illegal for Street Use
When do we get to wall off Philly and let it burn itself down?
Re: Philly Classifies Dirt Bikes and ATVs as Illegal for Street Use
Typical Democratic move, make an illegal act more illegal. That will stop the problem.
Re: Philly Classifies Dirt Bikes and ATVs as Illegal for Street Use
It's all about the appearance of doing something. "Look, we're trying to make a difference. Now shut the fuck up."
