FIX BAYONETS!!! Show your firearms with bayos
I don't think there's a bayonet thread yet, so I figured "why not start one?"
As this is in the "gun pics" thread, I'd prefer to see pics of bayos on guns, preferably in the "fixed" position.
Hmmm... this is embarrassing. I can't find the photo I was going to post. :o
Unfortunately, I sold the only rifle I owned with a bayo.
I did find one photo with it extended on the day I brought it home, still caked in cosmoline... (Yugoslavian SKS)

M1 Garand - Manufactured April 1943
16 Inch Bayonet - Manufactured 1942
This picture was taken in my back up kitchen. If you are REALLY serious about something, and I like to eat, you need to have a back up.
Makes sense for guns, makes sense for kitchens, but, I'm not dumb enough to press the concept with women. The Hippy Chick would shoot me dead!

Wow. The bayo on the Garand looks like it's 3' long!
I've not done much research on them, so I don't know if they were made in different lengths. I have one that my father in law had brought home after WWII... I'm going to go and measure it.
(Also have 2 Mauser bayos he brought home.)

10 and 16"
it uses the same bayo as the '03 series of rifles.
the first world war saw bayo's as a very real weapon, by the time first world got around to act two, the bayo was still a front line weapon, but was on it's way out.
so instead of issuing bayo's almost a foot and half long, they reduced the length to a still very menacing 10"s.....many of the 16 inchers were later cut down to ten inches.
as a side note, the bayo(or rather butter knife) issued for the m16 is almost the same bayo designed for the m1carbine.....designed some 25-30 years prior.

I did a little research before I bought my bayonet. From what I read, the 16 inch bayonet was originally made for the 1903 Springfields and then when the Garand entered service, it was designed to use the same one.
About midway through WW II, they determined that 10 inches was a more effective length and changed the design of the new production, as well as began reworking the 16 inch units, cutting them down to 10 inches.
As a result, the remaining 16 inch bayonets are somewhat rare, making them more expensive. That's why I wanted the 16 inch. I gave around $200 for it a few years ago and the 10 inch ones could be had for around $100.
Every time I pick that rifle up, I am humbled and awed by the men that carried that weapon and what they did with it. I consider the rifle and bayonet one of my most cherished firearms.

Thanks for the info and yes, I'm humbled as well.
Since I don't have a rifle to attach it to, I did the next best thing, and pulled out my father in law's army uniform to use as a backdrop for an impromptu photo shoot...

I believe I read somewhere that you can tell which bayonets were cut down by noting that the "blood groove" extends the length of the blade. (Indicating it was once a longer blade)
More photos, including the German (K98) bayos here:

yes that was once a 16" m1905 bayonet manufactured by american fork & hoe company......who's contract was awarded on 24, dec 1942.
it was cut to a spear point(vs the knife point) some time after 5 may 1943.
this is an m1 bayonet produced by the same afh.

Excellent idea for a thread! I've been holding off starting one until I got a bayo for my recently aquired SMLE. I'm sure I'll find one at the VFGS next weekend, and then I'll post my small collection representing almost 100 years of pig stickers in service.

Very cool idea for a thread. I got up and snapped a few pics.

My Yugo SKS - I got this from Century with a beat up stock. I had to do a lot of repair to it to smooth it out, then I treated it with Alumahyde II from Brownells. I love the finish. I prefer the wood but considering how this thing looked when I got it, she cleaned up very nicely.

My SAR1... because there always has to be an AK in the crowd:
