Question for the cops of POOFA
I'm currently hanging at Mom & Dad's because reasons. Mom likes a bunch of cop shows - BlueBloods, NCIS, Magnum, Five-O, etc. We see the same thing in almost all of them, and she always asks why:
Cops call out to a suspect, either the suspect's name or "Police!", from a significant distance. Suspect goes all Usain Bolt with a massive head start. Is this just a TV thing, or is there training behind it that I am missing?
Thanx.

Technically Magnum is not a cop show, neither is Rockford files or Mannix, or Charlie's Angels.
The script said "long foot chase that indicates the hero's dedication and physical ability".
Re: Question for the cops of POOFA
I want to know why they all pull their guns out for the chase.

Re: Question for the cops of POOFA
There used to be a training regimen back in the day. I believe it was titled, “Feets don’t fail me now!”

Magnum could never chase anyone down while carrying a 1911 in his waistband.

To summarize his post, why do the cops in shows always yell police from a block or 2 away, giving the suspect ample time to run rather than wait for the cops to catch up.
And is this something real and trained by police, or just dumb police TV show thrill/plot line?
Re: Question for the cops of POOFA
No, we don*t do that. And we don*t engage in prolonged foot pursuits at full speed.
TV cop shows are the worst for foot pursuits, car pursuits, fights and police shootings. And that doesn*t help when actual uses of force are shown on the news.
The other one is there is always a parking spot for the police car to pull into at the call. And also when the cops are about to move in on a bust and like four cars appear out of nowhere, lights and sirens and converge on a group who appear to be caught by surprise.
I try to stay in the car for as long as possible in a foot pursuit ;)
