This is why I hope to never have to use my firearms in self defense. Best case scenario this poor guy has a long expensive legal case on his hands to prove his innocence

It doesn't look good for Randy if the intruders were fleeing/exiting the residence.

So if you own a run-down, untidy home, it might be mistaken for abandoned, so you therefore forfeit your right to self defense because tweekers and ho's might think they can enter the property to drug-up or turn tricks?

It was dark, I couldn't see, I was scared for my life, talk to my lawyer.

I think this is where he went wrong.

Halterman told police Schultz and the woman were running towards a first-floor exit, and that's when he fired four more shots. He then called 911 and told police he "didn't want them to get away."
The right to remain silent is there for a reason.

Yeah... this is why you don't talk...

Castle doctrine should apply, even if the intruders are on their way back out. There are no provisions in PA's law (18 Pa. C.S. § 505) that nullify it based on direction of travel.
Did the intruders "unlawfully and forcefully enter" and were they "present within, a dwelling"? Yes. Case closed.
IMO, the belief that they may be leaving, and the desire to prevent that, while maybe macabre or uncaring, is irrelevant to the legality of killing them pursuant to clear allowances spelled out in statute.

Don't talk to police. Nothing good will come from it.
