I have 2 of these:

Simplex lock; quick access, no batteries.
Re: Keeping Dad away from the EDC
The Gunvault is about the fastest access you can get. (or other copies of it)
I like it because you just press buttons in a sequence that you choose - no numbers, no dial, easy peasy - without even looking at it.
You have to screw up the combo more than a few times before it temporarily locks you out.

Someplace where he's not going to go looking, so no candy boxes or porn stashes. Or just a screw-top container where you have to depress a tab to turn the lid. Ever see old folks try to open child-proof bottles? They ask the nearest child to open them.
If it were kids, then I'd say a key-operated safe, because kids are crafty and nimble. But it's EASY to hide things from people who keep losing their own watches and wallets and glasses.
Kids watch YouTube videos so the key is a vulnerable avenue of attack.

+1 on the V-Line... good place for your car keys too, things you don't want misplaced for you. They can all be screwed down, or mounted, if desired, or just sit on top of a nightstand.
Sorry for your father, your mom and you and good luck. This is a tough one on all involved.

I bought this Hornady keypad one for travel - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1020670128?pid=279164
I want to say I paid like $89 for it at Rural King if you have one nearby. It only takes a few seconds to open and so far pretty happy with it.
Re: Keeping Dad away from the EDC
What about between the box spring and mattress? Would he have enough strength to move a mattress? It's close, fast and when you are sleeping on it, he has no chance of moving it. You could also put a lock on the bedroom door. Hang the key up high out of reach.

Zip lock bag inside the toilet tank. Bonus, you'll save on your water bill.

Damn low-flush toilets don't flow enough water already...
