1. Luckily there are no big trees near my house so I'm good there. 2. During the storm I can take them inside, but if the house get's blown away they are gone as is the rest of my stuff, so I then buy an RV and move into it.

Truly portable I would recommend 2 options. I can speak from personal experience with both but a lot of this would need to depend on what specifically you want to power (amperage), what you define as portable and how long you Expect to Power it.
First are folding solar panels I keep in my Emergency bag - 21w and 10w. Both will power and charge the small battery banks I keep on hand for emergency power of mobile devices but they are slow and will become paperweights if it*s cloudy. But I*m sacrificing for portability - they make folding 60w and 100W panels but they can be hit or miss as far as quality and efficiency and the potential for being cost prohibitive would be a concern.

The 2nd is a vehicle inverter. The one I have is 750W and will run off of my vehicle battery. It*s use is limited compared to an actual generator but it*s cost effective and for a few hours of run time on my vehicle I can power the essential items in the house during power outages.

Just saw these this weekend. https://harborfreight.com/lawn-garde...ger-68750.html based on the small panel (USB phone charger) that I got from them before, I'm putting some thought to this, may meed my needs.
This looks like a good portable backup charger for a vehicle.

i keep seeing this thread and thinking this.

I bought one of these and did this mod to it.

I also bought one of these OBDII accessory cables. It works well, I checked the tines with multimeter.

Power "storage" vs power "generating"....and whatever your definition of "portable" is, if you've ever considered looking at something for power storage take a look at building your own storage pack using used Nissan Lithium batteries. https://offgridsolarbook.com/blog/20...n-leaf-modules
I've done this on my electric powered hunting cart and swapped out 500-lbs of flooded lead acid batteries for 160-lbs of Nissan Leaf batteries. Twice the run distance and pretty much zero maintenance.
Here's a pic of my install when about 90% complete. 48V along with a quality Battery Management System and the setup works great. I've seen threads on the web where guys have put together large packs of Leaf batteries for travel trailer power storage. Just educate yourself on the safety of 'em first!!

Hello all,
I own and operate a business that specializes in off-grid energy. I think the point being is to "have something" .
Not one solution fits all needs. BUT I must stress quality over junk. Something made to last. Cheap (Chinese) options are the last thing you would use for a firearm, so don't deviate now. Solar is the best option, I have sites that have been operating without human interaction for 7 years. Electric ovens are out of the question. Security cams, charging stations and coms are easily powered up. I LOVE the leaf battery BTW, Some of the best systems are made by repurposing good tech already out there.
If you want more power and are ok with making noise by running a generator, I suggest you pickup a light tower. Yes, the highway construction type. I have stripped them of the lights. The mast is extendable (typically up to 30') Great for mounting a antenna to. The engine is a KUBOTA D series 3 cylinder. Output is 6000 watts 120/240. They are mechanical injection and will run off any diesel, used motor oil or vegetable oil. Already trailer mounted so they can be towed behind a ATV or any car /truck. I have run most to 12K-14K hours. That's about 2 years of continuous use (hours) . No gasoline or propane will run that long.
I've been interested in some portable solar panel system that I could power communications with. Something in the $200-300 range. Anyone own something reliable that stores reasonably easy without worrying about damage?
