I use to marvel at the BIG BOY when it was behind the Lackawanna hotel. When I had to deliver there it made my day because I got see the size compared to my truck. I know there was/is one out in Cheyenne Wy. and one in Kalifornia.
Steamtown is on my places to visit this summer. I would love to see one of those in person. I would love to see one operate. IIRC, I read an article not too long ago that Union Pacific recently rebuilt one and it's the only one in operating condition.
The only locomotive that I've seen to compare it to is the Allegheny at the Henry Ford museum. That thing is an immense machine and much more rare with only two examples left. I would've liked to been around to see one of those pulling coal cars over the Allegheny mountains.
It was never "away", it was in the roundhouse being cleaned and detailed.
