WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
I recently saw somewhere on the net about surplus IMR 5010 powders breaking down and after I poked around today I found that there were a number of houses that burned down because of the breakdown and self combustion of this powder.
If you bought any of this powder back in the 2000s from Talon, Hi tech, GI Brass or else ware check it immediately. If you smell a strong ammonia or acidic smell ditch it immediately.
I found three jugs that were really bad. I checked and the ball powders like WC 820, 860, 872 do not seem to be affected.
Re: WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
Does that include virgin 5010? Mine smells just like it did in 07. And what about already loaded ammo, I guess that is affected also?
I just emailed pats reloading where I bought mine. When they get back to me I'll post the results,.
Re: WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
It's possible that the virvin may not be affected, but you never know it might have been pulldown repackaged. Just check to make sure. My guess is that the ammo maybe affected too and i have around 500 or so rounds that I loaded some years back with that powder..
Re: WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
Here is the lot number for the IMR 5010 powder that I found bad: LC TALI-05-012
Re: WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
I dodged that bullet (I hope). Mine is lot# arvo1f 080705
Still haven't heard back from pats.

Well, have 100rnds of bad bullets. I pulled them last night, have the shells soaking in water.
I have to see later tonight how bad they are, my just scrap the brass.

Can the primers be extracted if the brass is shot?

I removed one last night, all blue and corroded. I just washed them all. I know, there goes about 40 bucks in primers,
and 100 bucks in brass.
Did you get my PM from this morning? I dont know if it went through.

I loaded them in 2012:) I ran into a article on the web last week when I was looking for loading data.
It was a article I saw before I loaded mine, but just blew it off. So I decided to check. Sure enough,
some went bad. I just opened the jar of powder, you cant take a big whiff it'll burn your nose out.
It smells like chlorine. I have about 2.5lbs of it in a container, when I go up state next I'll throw it in the fire pit.
