If it starts to take food off the table, or the only space left to store it is next to the furnace, you have too much.
Re: Why do people stock pile ammunition? How much is too much in terms of ammunition?
I shoot too much to stock pile.
It's like Sisyphus, but just emptying the wallet and lugging boxes from the store to the range and matches only to find they are all empty.
Re: Why do people stock pile ammunition? How much is too much in terms of ammunition?
I do it to save money down the road.
I am just starting into the last case of the $89 7.62X39 I bought in the early 90's.
I still have a couple hundred rounds of Cordite loaded .303 Brit that I used to buy for well under $10 per box of 48(? or what ever odd number the boxes were)
Israeli IMI 5.56 from the 90's as well that I picked up loose packed in 50 cal cans for $80 per 1000 and still have some grey box Norinco 9mm 124grn that was about $3.50-4 a box IIRC when buying a case.
I just sold 10 140rnd S. African .308 battlepacks that I bought for $25 over 10 years ago for $80 each a couple weeks ago. I used that money to buy ammo that I actually use at the ECGS sale.
I just bought a pile more 5.56 at the going out of business sale at ECGS just because I can't touch 1K of Prvi or Federal for under $300 like I did there.
Same goes for LE 12ga slugs, will I ever need 500 rnds of it? Probably not, but at well under $2 a box I'll take it for blasting ammo.
Winchester Supreme turkey ammo for less than $4 a box?, hell yes I'll buy that and I don't even turkey hunt. same goes for the BlackCloud waterfowl shot, under $10 a box. (Great trade investment IMO.)
Bricks of CCI .22LR for $11 & some change? I grabbed all I could find.
I don't see it as stockpiling, I see it as "I have the money now, it's going to cost more later, so buy".
If I have $20 left over after paying bills, I can go buy a couple beers at the Legion, or I can go buy a couple boxes of ammo. I choose the ammo.
Like someone else said, as long as you're not starving out your family to buy ammo, it's not a bad thing to buy it up if you can.
Re: Why do people stock pile ammunition? How much is too much in terms of ammunition?
Appreciate the comments fellas....I think Ill get my .22 to 5000, 9mm to 1000, .380 to 500, and .223 to 1000 (base levels)
that should keep me good :)

Have about 700 rounds of .22, 300 rounds of 9mm, and 100 of .380.
Serious Question....why do people stock pile ammo?
Is it to be prepared for the End of the World?
You don't shoot much by those numbers. I can go through all of your stash in one outing in a few hours getting some good training in. If I bring my kids along, I'd have to up your tally by a thousand or so.
I buy 99% of my ammo online by the case. It's not uncommon for an average order for me to get 5,000-10,000 combloc rifle rounds if I'm getting milsurp.
If I see ammo on sale online, I usually jump on it knowing the rollar coaster ride ammo prices can take at times. In higher priced times, I start to relaod more than buy. I'm stocking up now on reloading supplies in case prices jump approaching the election.
Then there is the stock pile part, yes I like to stockpile a good amount for various reasons.

Yep, $$$...I shoot a lot but only in .22 and 9mm, occasionally .380. The range is right across the street from Wally World so I usually buy as I shoot. Needless to say, I'm still spending about 25 a week in ammo.
I go to the range about 3 times a week and my training/practice is purposeful in that I'll only put a total of about 100 rounds down range, typically 50 of each caliber. Basically a magazine or two at 15, 25, and 50 feet from various positions. Just started shooting the .233 and got the bug :) Looking forward to the summer.
Re: Why do people stock pile ammunition? How much is too much in terms of ammunition?
I have been around long enough to have seen the price for a 50 round box of .45 Long Colt that sold for $4.95 in the late '50 to the current price of over $35.00 a box.
I have also saw the price of reloading components & firearms (both new & used) go up accordingly.
So, IMHO the answer to your question is you can NEVER amass tooo much ammo. Hell, I even have a couple hundred rounds of .380 & .25 auto and don't even own a weapon in those calibers.

I stock pile for 2 reasons.
1) Price is always going up. I buy in bulk to keep it as cheap as possible.
2) You never know what hair brained scheme politicians are going to come out with to make getting ammo hard or super expensive.
How much is too much is only limited buy your budget and storage capacity. I buy some every pay check.

My ammo pile right now reads,
22lr - 2500 rounds
44 - 875 rounds
45acp - 725 rounds
9mm - 1235 rounds
357 - 342 rounds
38+ - 150 rounds (hardly use it)
7.62x54 - 4100 rounds
12ga - 825 rounds
16ga - 84 rounds
.410 - 165 rounds
7mm - 150 rounds
30-06 - 247 rounds
I'm still adding to it every week. These numbers look ridiculous but you can never have enough ammo. As a matter of fact, I just put a bid up on GB for 650 rounds 45acp.

very nice, you are obviously on top of things :) What type of rounds, target or the real deal, mine is all target except for my carry pistols.
