Thoughts on P239 in 9mm? (I love my P229 in 9mm)
Hi all,
I'm looking to get a CC gun and love Sigs, even though they tend to be a bit heavier. I have a P229 so am thinking of getting a P239.
I'd really appreciate any hands-on opinions on the P239 in 9mm, ESPECIALLY as compared to the P229.
I'm a little sad to find that the P239 weighs 29 ounces unloaded...that's only 3 ounces lighter than the P229. And the P239 only has 8 round capacity whereas I have 15-round mags for the P229...anyway, wondering what you think!
Thanks in advance!Last edited by 6.8Shooter; April 4th, 2010 at 11:55 PM.

For only 3 ounces more you can carry a P229. However the weight of the additional rounds is not included in this but I imagine a few extra rounds is not that big a difference. Not to mention you can carry Sig P226 magazines as spare mags for your P229. And Mecgar makes a great 15 round Sig P228/229 magazine and a 17-18 round P226 magazine.
The P239 is not as efficient in my opinion. It is slightly smaller and lighter but I would rather just carry the P229 which I shoot better.

I have a P239 and a P228, both 9mm. While the P228 is my favorite pistol hands down, the P239 is also high on my list. Yes, it does weigh more than others, but in a good holster it's not really noticeable in my opinion. I tend to carry the P239 much more often because of its smaller size, especially in the summer. I have a crossbreed supertuck which pretty much makes it disappear on my hip. It's a great shooter for a pistol of its size. I am able to shoot it as accurately as any of my other 9mms. I would highly recommend it.

I own both in 40. If you like the 229, you will also like the 239. Both are fantastic guns. As you said, the 239 is only a little smaller, but it is in the width of the grip. IMHO, width is the toughest thing to conceal in a handgun. Good leather will make it disapear (like Panzer said). For someone with small hands, the 239 is a little more user friendly. I'm a very big guy. As a result, I have no trouble (with an Alessi CQC-S) concealing the 229 so, my 239 actually does not see the light of day often.

While I worked as an LEO my duty gun was either a Sig 220 or Sig 226. For 7 or 8 years my off duty/concealed carry gun was a Sig P239 9mm.
The P239 9mm is an excellent concealed carry weapon, the weight is not the issue (providing that you have a good quality holster & belt), the issue for concealment is the grip size. That is where the P239 shines over the other Sigs.
I really like the 9mm when put in a smaller gun, easier to control for quick & accurate multiple shots on target. (Especially when you are moving, threat is moving, you are shooting strong or weak hand only, etc.....)
I really liked the P239 9mm; however I traded my Sigs for several Glock 19s, my current EDC gun. I still have several holsters and extra mags for one, who knows, someday I might buy another one (I kind of like the new DAK system).
So yeah, get the 239, I think that you will like it.Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice.

Of all my Sigs, I like the 239 in 9mm the best. I carry mine in an ankle holster made by Alessi. I don't even notice it's there.

Re: Thoughts on P239 in 9mm? (I love my P229 in 9mm)
THe 239 is only 2 ounces lighter than a 229, 0.1 inch thinner, and carries 5 less rounds than a 229, .
I had the same thought as you and the minor saving in width and weight doesnt justify the purchase of the 239 when i already have a perfect 229 in .40.
However the 239 is a sweet gun and i might eventually purchase one .

Re: Thoughts on P239 in 9mm? (I love my P229 in 9mm)
I carry both - a P229 in the winter when I'm wearing heavy clothes and a P239 all other times.
I find the P239 is easier to conceal and doesn't print as much as the P229 due to the single stack mag vs the fatter double stack mag grip size. I carry both in an OWB holster and find the P239 is more comfortable when driving. The seat belt buckle doesn't make the butt of the gun dig into my side as much.
What impresses me about the P239 is how accurate it is for it's size. The footprint of the P239 is also smaller than the P229 and for me is the perfect smallest CCW I can carry and shoot very accurately.
Like others have said, the weight isn't really a factor if you have a good holster and belt. I carry my P239 in an Alessi OWB holster on a Galco gun belt.

Re: Thoughts on P239 in 9mm? (I love my P229 in 9mm)
I really like single stack 9mm, especially Sigs. I have a 228 which I find very comfortable and a 239 that I really love. Although on paper there seems to be little difference in size and weight between the 229 and 239, in real life the difference is noticeable in how they feel. I don't have any specs handy for the 229 but I have the 228 at 1.5" wide and the 239 at 1.2" wide. As others have said the difference in width is what makes the 239 easier to conceal. If you're looking to go smaller than the 239 and stay with a metal gun you can check out the Kahr MK9.
