vent rib barrel
i have an 870 express with the vent rib barrle and was thinking about cutting it down to 18-20 inches... is it possible to have this done? or would it be cheaper/easier to just buy another barrel ?

Re: vent rib barrel
Yes, you can cut it, but you will be cutting the choke out, it will make it cylinder bore after the cut.
Search the web for Remington 870 barrels. I've seen them go for $90 (used) to $250 (new). Most 18 inchers out there are rifled barrels. The smooth are a bit harder to come by. I have some links at home for used Remington barrels, I'll see if I can dig them up for you.

Re: vent rib barrel
What Hawk said.
Instead of cutting the barrel, I'd just get a slug barrel. I got one for my 870 years ago that's smooth bore with a rifled choke tube that could be changed out with a IC (or other) tube. That was a factory Rem barrel. I'm not sure if you can still get them from Remington, but I'm sure you can find one somewhere."It's hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong."

Re: vent rib barrel
I cut mine 870 express down with no problems what so ever.
Also, go on gunbroker, theres a million barrels out there for this gun. 18.5", smooth bore. THey are there.
EDIT: where the heck are you guys getting that most 18" are rifled? Its actually the opposite, those are more for tactical use and are smooth bore, no choke. Most rifled barrels are 20", but that doesnt mean that most 20" are rifled.Last edited by Franky4Fingers; November 30th, 2009 at 07:23 PM.

Re: vent rib barrel
You never said why you wanted to do this. Everyone is assuming that you want it for home defence. Is this the case? If you have established a "safe room" in your house then any length barrel will do. If you foresee moving about your house in search of intruders then get yourself a good pistol and flashlight. Shotguns do not go around corners well.
