Default a good rifle/shotgun to protect and keep in home?

Hello I was planning on buying a rifle or shotgun to keep in my home for protection i was thinking of a bolt action rifle, or a shotgun both within the price range of $400-$600. Also can you give me some suggestions on ammunition that is not too expensive, Thank You

I'd go with the rem. 870 tactical, or a benelli M2 tactical...

Shotgun over rifle, it has a larger span of impact, and with the correct loads, you can avoid shooting it through dry wall.

also, I'd suggest maybe a 870 Youth Model in 20g... Why you ask...?

Because everyone in your household can be trained with it, it is light and managable for tighter cornering if needed. Also, the recoil is more manageable and there is sure to be a load type that would be as effective as the 12g.

That being said. I own a 870P Police Magnum... I love it, but it is heavier then most mossy's I have held, but it is a beast... BUT my wife is afraid to shoot it...

So my next Defensive Scatter Gun will be a 20g Youth Model.

    Hope this helps.

Mossy's are great too... Pick up both a 870 Remington and a Mossy and play with the action and controls... Get what is most comfortable for you.

Also. A Bolt Action is too slow for follow up shots if needed. Pump is still quick, and pump is also more reliable then a Semi-Auto Shotgun...

I have a mossberg tactical shotgun(12 ga) for home defense. Short in length, easier to handle. You can get them for a couple hundred bucks. The gun is great for the price, shotgun is always better for home defense than a rifle. I use 00 buckshot.

    For 400 to 600$$ ??? Semi auto...right??

A Remington 870,Winchester defender or Mossy 500/590 would work fine. A Benelli Nova would also work. I keep a Mossy 590A1 with bayonet in the bedroom. 8+1 and a nice sharp pointy on the end. One part of a balanced home defense plan.

If you are on a limited budget---and who isn't, i'd suggest even a Mossberg Maverick. You can get them for under $200. I have one in 12g and it works good. I would switch between 00 buck shot and slugs. That will give you enough to protect the inside of your home as well as the outside (slugs).

If you want to buy a rifle too, you can't go wrong with an sks. Its a semi auto and holds 10 rounds. If you are looking for something a little less scary looking, i'd consider a lever gun in .357 mag or 30-30. In my opinion, a lever gun is much faster than a bolt gun.

The Mavericks work but they're harder to find accessories for than the 500/590. If one is going to leave it bone stock then it's no biggie.
