Default Gun cleaning: what oil, lube, solvent so you use? Why?

Title says it all. What do you use, & why? I want to protect my investments, from my every day carry to my hundred dollar single barrel shotgun. I'm not a huge firearms Geek, but I know many of you are. Share your knowledge!

    Great question!

I use Weaponshield as my go-to CLP. When I need extra muscle for cleaning, I go to everyone's favorite odoriferous standby, Hoppes. The only things I tend to use Hoppes for are cleaning shotgun fouling out of my Saiga and carbon rings off the cylinder face of my S&W.

Regardless of what I use to clean with, I always follow up with Weaponshield for lube and protecting (L and P in CLP, the C meaning "Clean").

The majority of my collection are German guns. And from about 1908 through 1945 the German Army used Ballistol. It's safe and effective for metal, leather, and wood, and even on minor cuts and scratches. I use it on every gun I own. I even use it to lube locks, hinges, etc. I also use a little Shooters Choice grease on the internal bits of my wheel guns and lever action rifles, but they don't need to be taken apart very often. Add a silicone cloth to wipe things down like the outside of guns and magazines and I'm all set.

You will get a lot of suggestions and a lot of product suggestions. I found my solution, eventually you will find yours.

I also use Ballistol for all my stuff. The family tells me that I use Ballistol like the dad used Windex in the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." LOL

Mobil 1 synthetic for lube, I drain the jug into a little bottle after oil changes. Let it sit upside down overnight, because I'm cheap:P

To clean I use hoppes #9, sweets 7.62, and/or dawn dish detergent ( blue stuff). Dawn works great with hot water to clean off cosmoline and carbon. YMMV.

I used Weaponshield for a long time before switching over to frog lube. I like the FL a lot better. It has excellent lubricity, and has cut my cleaning time in half.

When I clean, (about once a year for hunting rifles, semi's as needed) I use Shooters Choice for the most part. Sometimes one of the foaming cleaners. I think the oil is Hoppes or Outers and I have a tube of Outers gunslick grease around here somewhere.
