And I wanted some input. I have some ideas on the ones I would like to consider but are their any other suggestions you might want to add.

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
Just ordered that same Spikes upper from Aim last night, from what it appears and the reveiws I read it's a great upper. Uses all current mil-spec materials such as barrel steel, and the BCG is also mil-spec. All HP/MP testing done on both barrel and bolt. For the money it's the best deal going.
Not to mention the Spikes is complete for 10.00 more than a bare BCM, however the BCM has a cold hammer forged barrel, but IMO it's not that big of a deal. Both are quality barrels.Last edited by arjohnson; October 13th, 2011 at 08:21 PM.

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
Yes coming with everything is a plus....I suppose I could sell the BCG and charging handle. I have a BCM or LMT Auto BCG for this build, depends on if I want to switch the LMT to this and put the BCM in my current. Plus I wanted to get a Gunfighter charging handle.
But coming with the MOE hand guard, which was the plan for the build anyway, is always a plus.Last edited by SNAFUG36; October 13th, 2011 at 08:49 PM.

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
Nothing against LaRue, but $1500 is a little steep for me. My builds, to me at least, are economical and if I really needed it, SHTF (just need to get the one sighted in, currently minute-of-bar-door, I'm terrible at sighting stuff in)
This build so far is:
PSA Lower
PSA MOE lower parts kit
Magpul CTR stock
BCM or LMT Auto BCG
Still need(would like to get)
Light weight upper(obviously)
Redi-mag system
Troy BUIS rear
MOE hand gaurd
Aimpoint T-1, or what ever they have out buy the time I can afford it

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
And from the dead, this thread lives!
Recently posted in a dead thread about my interest in putting together an AR pistol. Doing the same thing here, but with the interest in putting together a light weight rifle.
So I think I roughly know the direction I want to go, but it won't be cheap. My quick estimate brings the part's list to around $1150ish with just Magpul sites.
Interested to hear what Light weight ARs are with the members of this forum and what they think.
My project parts:
-Anderson Manufacturing Upper with only a brass deflector
-.625 Low Profile Gas block - brand to be determined
-Brownells 16" Light Weight Carbine Barrel (nitride) OR BCM 16" Lightweight Barrel (Chrome lined)
-MI SS Gen 2 9"
-Phase 5 Tactical SA BCG
-Magpul front/rear sights
-PWS FSC556
-Stag Lower
-PSA LPK
-Magpul K grip
-H2 or T2 buffer
-Milspec Buffer Tube
-Battlelink Minimalist Stock
I feel these parts will give me a very light weight rifle without the increase in felt recoil. However, I don't know for sure.
I'm using an SA profile BCG b/c I already have it and don't know what else I would use it on. Bought it by mistake by not reading the description. The heavier buffer would mitigate the recoil felt with the SA BCG and maybe offer some balance. Maybe? If it makes no sense, I have several FA profile BCGs I can use.
The barrel choice is tough. Brownells and BCM are both in stock with the profile I want. Brownells is a little cheaper and nitride, but the BCM is tested and proven but more expensive. I looked at Model1 and Double Star to save some money but not sacrifice much, however they all come with the FSB and I'd rather not have pin holes/grooves when putting the low pro block on.
Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts on your light ARs.

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
Well the one I built for my wife, which this thread was originally about, to me at least, works great and serves it purpose. She can get repeat hits on steel at 200 yards(extent of our range). I don't have a scale handy to get a weight on it but it's not to bad for her. Haven't had any issues with any ammo we've run thru it, brass, steel, it ate it without a hiccup.
Specs:
PSA Lower
PSA MOE LPK
CTR Stock
LMT BCG w/H buffer
Spikes Light weight barreled upper, Mid-length
MOE Hand guard and VFG
Magpul RBUIS
Aimpoint T-1 on ADM mount
Impact Weapon Components light mount with G2 (might change)

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
My favorite build so far is my lightweight. It's close to 5lbs dry & it's got that great balanced feel. Accurate & just plain fun to take for a walk in the woods.
Spike's upper
Noveske chainsaw lower
BCM Charging handle
M16 bcg from Joe Bob's
Daniel Defense 16 light weight contour w/ carbine gas
Cheap carbon fiber 13" tube I drilled holes in for air flow & mounted a short plastic magpul rail on the top
Rogers superstoc - I love this thing
No BUIS, just an el-cheapo Primary Arms micro dot

Re: So my next build is leaning towards lightweight.....
I have two lightweight uppers from PSA and the hand guards make the biggest difference. I have a samson evolution on one and it feels a lot lighter than the magpul set up.
I have never weighed them but the feel is so much more balanced with the lighter forend.
