Remington R1 1911 Help Please

I took some targets down to the farm this morning and was doing some shooting drills with my semi-new Remington R1 when after only about 30 rounds the slide locked back with a round still in the gun. I didn't think anything of it until it did this 2 more times. The slide usually locks back after the last round has been fired but it did this 3 times with a round still to be fired. What would cause this? Thanks a lot for the help

Was the round jammed in the feed ramp and that is what "locked" the slide?

If so this was happening to my S&W 1911. It seems to be related to the factory mags. I purchased a Wilson Combat and Colt mag and with some dry runs (Racking the slide by hand) the better mags seem to have solved the issue.

No, the rounds actually fell out of the gun after it locked back

Was there only 1 round left in the mag when this happened? Maybe when the slide comes back the last round pops up out of the mag and the slide catches on the mag follower. This would explain the loose round and the slide locking back before it's empty. Most factory mags really suck. I had problems with my Springfield mags too. Like the last guy said Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick mags are supposed to be decent. There are some really good 1911 guys on here that may give better advice than me, but that's all I got.

Sounds like a magazine problem. Try a Chip McCormick mag or one similiar first, just because it is cheaper than the Wilson mag for troubleshooting purposes. What brand is the mag that came with it? ACT or does Remington have their own mags now?

If it is a 8 round mag, try it out with only 7 rounds loaded, or 1 less than mag capacity.

You did not mention what ammo you were shooting. I had this happen to me on rare occasions, with magazines that I knew were good, using Remington 180 grain flat nose. IMO junk ammo. Try some 230 grain ball ammo, avoid the hollow points during break-in period of a couple hundred rounds.

You said the gun was 'semi-new'? Did you buy it new?

Hopefully, the legendary gunsmith named "Bubba" did not already molest it on his kitchen table with a Dremel tool and a rat tail file and 80 grit sandpaper. A fairly common problem==know nothing butchers who try to polish the feed ramp and throat. Then when it is ruined he trades it in or sells it to an unsuspecting buyer, and adds to the 1911's undeserved reputation rumors of being unreliable.
I hate that guy, it seems like nearly half of the used 1911's that seem to be a good price have already fallen victim to his craftsmanship.

The mags are from Remington, came with the gun and I was shooting 230 ball ammo. I bought the gun new too so 'Bubba' wouldn't have had a chance to fondle this one
