Cabela's Rant
Let me start this out by saying that I love to go to Cabela's ant look around. I enjoy looking at the displays and my kids love it there too. We will spend half a day there just walking around and eating at the cafeteria.
This is what I don't comprehend about most Cabela's customers. Why would anyone in their right mind stand in line for hours, at some points, and pay an astronomically high price for a firearm when they can go to ANY local gun shop and deal with less crowds and pay less money. I understand that Cabela's has a large variety of firearms in stock BUT why pay all that extra money? With the way the economy is right now, wouldn't you want to shop around? I have seen guns at Cabela's priced up $100.00 more than smaller gun shops within 15 minutes drive from them! I would go to Cabela's and find the firearm that I want and them go to a local store and order it from them. This is better in many ways. First, the local stores will save you money. Second, the small gun shops will stay in business, which is better for everyone. Remember, Cabela's doesn't pay property tax right now. Lastly, the small gun shops care about their customers. Do you think Cabela's cares if they retain you as a customer? Think about it people! This ends my rant!

Re: Cabela's Rant
Like you I will travel out to Cabela's to look around or when I receive a good discount card in the mail. Their prices aren't great plus my preference is to deal with my local shop down the street since they are neighbors, and not some big corporate entity.
Do I think they care if I'm a customer? No, I don't think they care ... just look at how crowded the firearm department is, so crowded that it runs like a Deli meat counter with customers taking numbers.

Re: Cabela's Rant
First time i shopped there was from a forum here about cheap ammo boxes. I periodically buy from them when items are on sale only - then they are a fair price. I check the internet for prices but beware ...the internet prices change daily it seems.
Re the gun counter - I am a learning female fairly new shooter and believe me, i was telling one of the staff more about their guns than they could tell me......imagine that?? I think they need to train their staff better behind the gun counter. I am sure some are knowledgeable but the guy I got - he should not have been there.
In thinking on my post, I do want to say I understand that the staff cannot possibly know everything, but i do expect them to say they can find out for me if possible, or check a catalogue from a particular manufacturer. The staff member told me something that simply wasn't true even when i said i believe they do make them a particular way if ordered special.Last edited by Just1more; January 19th, 2011 at 04:03 PM. Re: Cabela's Rant
I keep getting gift cards from family for Cabela's as presents so that's why I find myself there sometimes, but I agree with you that they are overpriced and overcrowded. I'm guilty of wanting it now and I hate waiting for something to be ordered so that is the only good thing about Cabela's is that they usually have it in stock when I want it right away.

Re: Cabela's Rant
Cabelas is ok if you have a coupon for them such as 100 off a 500 purchase. This usually will make there firearms at a better price then elsewhere. Also nice to have points toward purchase. Otherwise will agree that there prices are very high.

Re: Cabela's Rant
But also keep in mind that Cabelas is an advertiser here on this site, thats probably where the extra money is going, to pay for you to play.
Also it must cost a lot of money to keep the store and Restaurant nice and warm and clean so you and your kids can have a nice day out. Right?
sometimes you have to see the other side of things.
There is no way a Cabelas can sell an item for the same price as the small shops that dont even provide a pot for you to piss in if you want to piss while shopping, the overhead is just not the same.

Re: Cabela's Rant
cabelas employes a lot of people in their hamburg store and the parking lot is always full no matter what day of the week you go there so they must be selling something to keep the place open. i really don't care how much they ask for their guns or any other product since this is america and i believe in capitalism. if i don't like the price i don't buy it's that simple. if i complain about a gunshop or any other business it's going to be about poor service, poor attitudes or unethical buisness practices. since nobody knows how much money it costs per month to keep cabelas open, employees paid, inventory stocked you really can't critisize their prices.

Re: Cabela's Rant
But as a business, you also have to follow the physics of pricing and customer service. If you're charging on average $100 more than another local place, you won't sell as many. If you have competitive pricing, you will sell more, hence increasing your profit. I could either sell one gun at $500, making $100 profit on it, or I could sell three at $450 and make $150 profit, and also reflect positive sales.
Like I said, I have never had a problem with Cabelas... they are a company, and they can do whatever they want (which most people seem to agree with in here), I just don't think they NEED to have higher prices.
I know there are various costs of running a business, especially one the size of Cabelas. However, it's common business sense to have appropriate pricing. They are obviously doing OK at this point in time... however, I honestly believe their gun sales would be massively improved if the pricing was more competitive.
But, they can do what they wish, as can each customer. Not really a big deal, just my opinion.III%

Re: Cabela's Rant
I am glad Cabelas prices for guns are high. Local gun shops would not be able to stay open if they were not.

Re: Cabela's Rant
cabela's price are good, when compared to Philly gun store, atleast i get to use my Credit card and not worry bout 3% surcharge, plus, 2% back and 150 off 500. they had a gen 4 g22 used for 450, i pickup 50 dollar worth of there stuff, used my 150 coupon, plus 3x.xx in cash back credit = 1 cheap ass glock 22.
gun store in philly charges too high, when i picked up my 1st gun, taurus 24/6 (only works 6days out of the week) in dec 08, i paid 600.00 including taxes, fees and abox of ball range ammo. to my surprised the gun was like 325.00 on buds.
in march of 09, another gun store wanted 700.00 for a sig pro2022.
last time i checked glocks were bout just under 600.00 at the local shops, cabelas has it for 550.00
