Default Re: Slow responding between threads, etc.

Two days in a row I was getting slow response time just after 1:00AM, that would be Monday, 10-19-09 and Tuesday, 10-20-09. It's not every time a page loads, it's just occasionally and it seems like going back takes a bit longer than going to a new page. Tuesday morning I actually had enough time to find a pen & paper and wrote down what it was waiting for as shown in the bottom left corner: (and still had time to wait)
pubads.g.doubleclick.net
Do I have spyware or adware that Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are missing? Or might I be getting infected with this junk so soon after I run the programs to get rid of it?

doubleclick is where our ads are served from, that's all.

I've noticed in the past that there can be extended wait time on browsers as they wait for certain content to be delivered from googlesyndication and doubleclick ad servers...

waiting on this content can hang the rest of the content of the page from loading until it times out, or it loads.

That really sucks.

Why is that? Why does the other content have to wait for the ads to load?

Or is that the way it is supposed to work... You can't see anything until you see the ads.

If the content is including javascript files, such includes are 'blocking' requests because javascript includes can potentially write content (which these includes do in fact do) and alter document flow. Nature of the beast unfortunately.

Danp is not going to like what I'm going to say. It may even get deleted (which I totally understand).

If you use firefox, install adblock plus, take the easylist+easyprivacy subscription. Enjoy most of the internet (pafoa included) essentially without ads, and the associated slowdowns associated therewith. If you value your privacy, set the same utility to nuke everything from google analytics.

If you use IE, it gets a bit dicier--finding a hosts file you can use on the PC to essentially resolve things like partner.googleadservices.com to 127.0.0.1 will also help speed things along.

I don't particularly begrudge anyone the attempt to monetize a site. However, what I've found is that I don't like it when those efforts impact usability. And since I don't click on web ads (ever), I don't really see the point in blowing bandwidth in order to pull them down. I'd rather have a system like PAFOA's, where I can toss the site a few bucks, rather that look at ads.

I don't begrudge anyone for using AdBlock or similar plugins, I use them myself regularly.

People just need to keep in mind that it costs almost $400/mo to host this site and those ads pay that bill.

I would gently encourage anyone that wants to use AdBlock to purchase a subscription to help offset the cost over the long term.

One of my goals with PAFOA has always been to reduce the number of times PAFOA has to pester people for charity/donations to as near zero as possible. The way I've done that is to find a better business model: Advanced Subscription Features and Advertising. I always figured that was better than receiving emails every month begging for donations to keep the servers online.

I have noticed that the forum has been running slow and timing out on my laptop, but it works fine from my phone. I'm not blocking ads but maybe one of them is timing out and slowing the forum down. I had that happen on another forum I ran.

There were some really bad spots today, sometimes (4 or 5) I couldn't even get to the site. Did tracerts and there were no network timeouts so I have to assume it was software related.
