How practical is "Practical shooting" IPSC

Perhaps some of you who have done IPSC enough times to understand it more than I, can help me understand.

As I understand it, it is a simulation. There are targets and often times interactive props. Be they walls, drums, or other barriers like doors and windows what have you.

You walk the course so you know what is inside. Sort of like Autox, you walk a course before you drive it.

Other than police and some form of swat, doesn't knowing where all the targets locations seem counterproductive?

In a situation where you are engaging in CQB you will most likely not know where the threats' locations are. So shouldn't one enter the shoot house without previous knowledge?

Or is IPSC not really a simulator but merely an intersting course to gauge reaction time, accuracy and target acquisition? And not about cqb tactics of engaging a force?

IPSC and IDPA are games.

They WILL help you with your gun handling and marksmanship skills. Just dont look for them to do more than that.

It will help with target transitions, quicker acquisition of targets and sight alignment, and it will make you a more accurate faster shooter.

+1 for the above comments. It also stresses you and forces you to react under stress-much different from casual paper punching. In the end you revert back to your training, even if it is just the basics of draw, target acq and trigger control.

Sounds like you have a handle on it.

Just as Auto-X isn't accident avoidance training, some of the skills learned there will help in many a driving situation.
