N.J. senator targets Ga. guns-in-airports legislation

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
WASHINGTON -- Taking direct aim at controversial gun legislation just passed by the Georgia General Assembly, a New Jersey senator has introduced a bill that would expand federal regulations on guns in airports.

Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg's "Firearm-Free Airports Act" would make it illegal to carry a firearm into any non-federally regulated area of an airport, including the lobby, baggage claim and ticket counter areas.
The bill would counter legislation passed by the General Assembly that would allow gun permit holders to carry weapons in any non-secure areas of a Georgia airport -- including Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world's busiest. The Georgia legislation is awaiting Gov. Sonny Perdue's signature.
“In the post-9/11 world, it simply defies common sense that it would be legal to carry a gun into an airport,” Lautenberg said in a statement. "Our airports face threats every day, and allowing someone to walk into a major airport with a loaded gun is a recipe for disaster."
Proponents of the Georgia legislation, backed by the National Rifle Association, have said it would clarify confusing regulations on where gun owners could carry their weapons.
Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, Georgia's junior U.S. senator, said he had not seen Lautenberg's bill Thursday, but expressed concern about federal lawmakers intervening in state law.
"We … start to try to pass acts to contravene state laws, that's something you have to be concerned with," Isakson said. "But I'll have to look at it."

So this, in effect, would make interstate travel via airline with firearms completely illegal? Since you would be prohibited from bringing your luggage to the airport?

Because we all know that terrorists follow the law.

I really do not understand because I do not know how federal areas of air ports are different.

It seems to me you would have to alert the Federal areas or workers before you brought in your luggage and they may have to handle it?

The law did not go into effect yet, but it bothers me when they try to do this stuff.

It is as if at some point we are all going to be breaking the law because of one of these feel good laws. We would not have intent, but just because of ignorant law makers we would be in danger.

Of course the criminal doesn't care.

This would effect us as well. Right now you can wear or bring your gun to the parts of the airport outside the security checkpoint.

If this passes how are you supposed to check your weapon in at the counter?

If airports face threats, do you not want your citizens to be able to stop those threats?

Of course it's a recipe for disaster. Not that there's a single shred of evidence to support that statement, but heck, who needs evidence when we're talking about common sense?

Just a note, I only posted the article.

I wrote nothing in the article.

In the post-9/11 world, it simply defies common sense that it would be legal to listen to Frank Lautenberg and claim that you had a dime's worth of common sense.

Doesn't this violate Federal interstate firearms transport regulation?
Here's the letter from the DoJ about JFK airport giving gun owners a hard time for transporting: http://www.nraila.org/images/DOJltrTSA.pdf

I seem to recall that there is something in the constitution about that...... Oh wait, the interstate commerce interpretation trumps the rest of the constitution, allowing congress to do whatever the damn hell they want.

    Sorry, forgot about that part.
