Default Refinishing teak stock on a Yugo M48?

What is the best way to refinish teak? I would like to lighten the color a bit as it is fairly dark but my understanding is that standard woodstains do not work well with teak being an oily wood. I am also not sure how much cosmo it has soaked up.

I bought the rifle from Mitchell's, the service grade which recieved no refinishing or cleaning prior to sale.

The wood is not Teak. Mitchells is known for stretching the truth about their product. Without seeing it, I would say the stock is Elm. Most M48s were. Have you tried a good cleaner? Family Dollar Store has a product called LA Awesome Cleaner, it really works. Get the grime off, you may like the color.

search in youtube for AK disassembly. You could easliy sell the wood for the yugo and get a synthetic stock cheap. Yugo wood is hard to find

Yup, that's Elm. Dollar Tree, not Family Dollar, has that cleaner. If you wish to try your hand at stripping/staining, most any chemical stripper will work. Once bare and dry, Formbys sells a pre-wash solution to use before applying stain. It works well. I like the stock color myself, a little cleaner followed up by some Lemon Oil (Formbys is good), it'll look great.

European Elm. Who knows where Yugo and Teak ever came together; folks been thinking their Yugo whatevers have Teak wood, when it is Elm, maybe Birch, or even Walnut.
