S&W 686 or Colt Trooper 357?
Local shop has both a pre-lock 686 and a Colt Trooper 357 in the used gun counter. Both are 6 inch ss and in very good condition. The Colt may be nickel as it shines like a piece of jewelry. Prices are very close as well.....around 550 or so if I remember right. What would the members recommend? Thanks.

I'd go with the 686.
I have a 681 which I absolutely love. The 681 is a 686 with fixed sights. I've fired a few 686s that friends / family own and they have all been smooth and accurate.

I have both and I give the edge to the 686. It seems to fit my hand better.

686 in a heartbeat, especially a pre-lock. A much smoother revolver, and SS is easy to keep clean and maintain. Once nickel starts to flake or corrode, that's it -- you need a re-nickel plating job.

I've only handled the 686, but I own 2 S&W, both are Performance Center revolvers. Still, I absolutely LOVE my Colt Trooper MK V. The Colt trigger is nearly, if not just, as good as the PC's. It's the most frequently fired 357 for me. I have the blued version and the finish is flawless. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but the Colt is somewhat rarer, if it's the MK V.

bOY I WISH YOU COULD GET BOTH OF THEM, THOSE ARE TOO EXCELLENT HANDGUNS, the troopers are going to go up in price very sooon , word on the "street" is thAT THE tROOper is going to be the next "hot" colt toi collect.
A prelock 686 is very very desirable and one heck of a Handgun.
Let us know what you got.

I own a 686 with a 6" barrel and owned a Colt Trooper with a 4" barrel. The guns are completely different.
The Colt cylinder doesn't even spin in the same direction. The colt's trigger has the cylinder turning just until the trigger breaks and the hammer falls where as the Smith's trigger has almost like a hitch in it to let you know the hammer is going to fall.
Personally, the Smith's trigger and grips convinced me to keep it and sell the colt which I wasn't shooting. The grips on the colt really dug in.
However, at those prices, I wouldn't buy either. I paid (within the past couple of years) 400 for my Smith and 300 for the Colt.

686 for the win. I have put alot of rounds through one, don't get me wrong I love colt's but the Smith would be more desirable to me

Get the Smith if you want to shot it a lot.
Get the Colt if you are looking for an investment.
or get both and shoot the Smith, and put the Colt in your safe.
