Default What's the deal with suppressors?

I don't get why people are so excited about suppressors on a handgun. What's the point? I think it takes some of the fun out of it - not hearing the bang.

Unless you are an assassin, why use one?

Because repeated loud noise isnt good for anyone's ears? Because if you have to use your handgun indoors in a defensive use, in your home, you may want to be able to hear afterward? or have your family's hearing protected?

How about being courteous at the range, or if you have a private range?

Or if you just want to?

If I want to do some target shooting on my own property, it would be nice to have the option to not disturb every neighbor in a quarter mile radius.

I hadn't even thought of the defensive/hearing issue. It's an excellent point.

I shoot in my barnyard on a regular basis with .22 conversion kits that are suppressed. That way I can train with a platform that I carry, and do it quietly without having to pack up and go to the range eight miles away. The most my neighbors hear is the "tink tink tink" of the lead hitting the bullet trap. And, they pretty much have to be outside and listening for it to hear that.

The Coolness factor is for the "Wannabe Operator/Mall Ninja " types.

I keep coming across posts talking about "especially love it with the supressor!!!" woo hoo. Sounded like something sexy and exciting. But it's for your hearing. Go figure.
