Ported Pistol Questions

I am the proud new owner of a SA XD9 V10. This is a ported version of the 4 inch XD9. I didn't go out looking for a ported pistol it just kind of found me. The price was very good and I just had to buy it. I know ports can be a detrimental feature on a defensive pistol. If I were to carry this pistol for defense I'd probably put an unported aftermarket barrel in it... I'm also aware that porting doesn't make much of a difference in a 9mm pistol.

My questions are: Is there anything special I should know about cleaning and care for a ported gun? Anything else I should be aware of? I've never owned a ported gun before and am just curious. Thanks for any info you guys may have.

I find the 9mm and .40 take VERY well to porting. The .45 ACP not so much......

When you clean her take a toothbrush and scrub out the ports to keep them from loading up.

Otherwise, some ported guns can be prone to limpwristing if they use a standard recoil spring since slide velocity can be slowed down just a bit.

You may find that the internals will be dirtier than a non-ported gun after firing. Other than that, its just straight-up standard maintenance.

About what I figured. A little dirty, not a problem. I'm also considering putting a non-ported barrel in at as well. We'll see how it goes.
