Can somebody explain to me what the rep power points are all about here?

How are they obtained and of what use are they?

Well, you see... I have a lot and you don't, so I get MUCH more respect around here than you.

Kidding! LOL!

I'll let someone else post a link to the several threads that have already explained it... basically, when you see something in a post that you agree/disagree with or someone does something kind, you click on the "scales" symbol and give a pos or neg "rep point" to that person for that post. The points add up and in combination with number of posts and time on forum, they give you your "rep POWER".

I don't look too deeply at someone's rep power and it's not going to get you any further in life by getting lots of rep points. (trust me! )
