Re: Mossy differences????????
the 590a1 has
a significantly heavier barrel (a1s only)
metal safety button and trigger guard (a1s only)
dual action bars (590s)
a clean-through capable magazine (590s)
bayonet lug (some 20" 590s/a1s)
500's and 590's do not share barrels
There are two different magazine lengths on 590s/a1s - barrels do not interchange between them because of different positions of the barrel band(s)
FWIW, the Mossberg heat-shield is NOT designed for the heavier a1 profile - some have modded it but YMMV
For the most part, all 590s that I've found are smooth-bore, fixed choke - cylinder bore. I found an oddball a1 profile, bbl w/ Ghost-ring and an accuchoke setup. My biggest regret is not buying several.Keep perspective, recognize the good in your enemies and the bad in your friends.

Re: Mossy differences????????
The 500 is basicly a civilian model
The 590 is police military grade, heavier barrel, I believe all have a steel receiver.
Here's some good info to help tell the differences

OK JD answered it better then I did

Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

Re: Mossy differences????????
I have a 500 Mariner. The finish isn't stainless steel, but MarineCote. Here's a short description from their website:
".....the venerable 12 gauge Mossberg® 500® Pump-Action. Fitted with a compact 18-1/2” barrel and rugged synthetic pistol grip and forearm, it’s offered in your choice of the blued Cruiser® model, the Mariner®, or the Sandstorm™ featuring our proprietary Marinecote™ finish for employment in or around harsh marine environments."

Re: Mossy differences????????
probably about $100.
The magazine tube is probably the biggest difference. You can't put an extended tube on the 500. Most accessories work on both models.

Re: Mossy differences????????
I put Accuchokes and ghost ring sights on a Marine-coat 590. It is a fun gun that I don't mind abusing unmercifully.
Only the very oldest 500's didn't have dual action bars. The regular 590 still has an aluminum receiver. I never drilled into an A1 so I couldn't speculate on them.
