    Post H&R mod 929 9-shot information query

    I inhereted my dad's H&R model 929 long barrel 9-shot .22 revolver.
    I would like to learn more about the piece.
    Can I find diagrams and manuals?
    Is there a table that decodes the serial number?
    etc?

    The first digits in the serial number tells which year it was made. H&R used a single or double letter digit that corresponds to a year. Like "B" is 1941, "C" 1942, etc, etc. They skipped a couple letters because they closely resembled a number. Post your letter(s) and I can give you a date of production.

    Numrich's has diagrams of most guns. You might have to pay for a copy though, some are free.

    How about my Dad's H&R Sidekick 929 with a AB12xxx number?

    My father was a lineman for Bell Telephone. He built the lines all over the mountains of North Central PA. He would go up the pole (with the long spikes on the side of his boots) in the morning and when the sun came out the rattle snakes would lay on the rocks at the foot of the pole. He carried the 929 with bird shot to clear a path through the snakes when he came down the pole. I recall he bought the pistol at the town hardware store.

    "AB" is 1965, give or take 1 or 2 years depending on which date-to-character list you go by. There are 2 lists or so floating around that vary on a couple characters.

    Year starting S.N. Prefix
    1940 A
    1941 B
    1942 C
    1943 D
    1944 E
    1945 F
    1946 G
    1947 H

    1952 M
    1953 N
    1954 P
    1955 R
    1956 S
    1957 T
    1958 U
    1958 V
    1960 W
    1961 X
    1962 Y
    1963 Z
    1964 AA
    1965 AB
    1966 AC
    1967 AD
    1968 AE

    1972 AJ
    1973 AL
    1974 AM
    1975 AN
    1976 AP
    1977 AR
    1978 AS
    1979 AT
    1980 AU
    1981 AV
    1982 AW
    1983 AX
    1984 AY
    1985 AZ

    Second letter of prefix
    A= 1986
    B= 1987
    C= 1988
    D= 1989
    E= 1990
    F= 1991
    G= 1992
    H= 1993
    I= 1994
    J= 1995
    k= 1996 H&R will only fit the original chambering or 357mag and 44mag barrels to these frames since they were outsourced.
    L=1997 "
    M=1998 "
    N=1999 "
    P=2000
    R=2001
    S=2002
    T=2003
    U=2004
    V=2005
    W=2006
    X=2007
    Y=2008 serial number prefixes changed in May 2008, CBA for SB2 and CAC for SB1
    CB ? 2009

    The first letter N = NEF, H = H&R, the second letter denotes year of manufacture.
    You're looking for a P or later if you want to be able to order barrels marked with * an asterisk on the accessory barrel page.

    Ilion made barrels will have the last 4 digits of the frame serial number engraved on the left side of the barrel underlug, earlier barrels made in Gardner will have just the last three.

    Greetings! I have my Granddads old H&R Model 929 with serial # AM41816. I also have his pistol permit dated: May 31, 1974 that cost him $3.00 and I believe the pistol cost $51.93. Can anyone give any info and does anyone have a manual? Thanks for any help!

    The info in the thread is still good, even for being so old. It was made in 1974, according to the serial. Here is a link to the Numrich website with the parts listed:

    https://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufac.../929-38110.htm

    My uncle had a 999 which is very similar to that one. We ended up having to replace the mainspring, ordered it from numrich and everything worked out fine.
