New toy- Sig Mosquito!
Just when my credit card was starting to get over the last shock...
I went to CP today and was looking in the case for a possible new (used) wheel gun. I was thinking .22 wheel gun because the Taurus 94 just wasn't what I had hoped for.
So he hands me a couple of used ones and neither one did it for me. Then he says "does it have to be a revolver?" Before I could answer he brings out a used Mosquito with the crazy red dot sight thing on top. I knew I was in trouble as soon as my fingers closed around the grip. It didn't want to be put down and begged to come home with me. So what could I do? Of course... I adopted it! Traded in the Taurus and start filling out forms.
Didn't have much time to shoot after all the paperwork was done but did manage to get about 50 rounds through it. That red dot thing is pretty cool. Adjusted the elevation a bit and it's good to go. It's mounted so you can still use the original sights too. Best thing to me is that I can focus on the target and the dot stays focused too. Since getting my cataract fixed my front sight focus is amazingly clear but the target goes fuzzy. I guess I now have "normal" vision but it's great.
So far so good. Might need a break in because it looked to me as if it was never fired. Otherwise it just doesn't care for cheap ammo but that's really no surprise. Range report coming soon!
Looks like me and Sig have started a beautiful long term relationship.

I guess I'll be the one to say it:
Pics or it didn't happen!
I recently took a look at a Mosquito in my local gunshop. I've heard both good and bad things about it, but I trust Sig so I wanted to feel one for myself.
Since you didn't say otherwise I'm assuming you got the all black model. The one I played with the other day was the winter digital camo model and my girlfriend fell in love with it. It may be following is home some day soon.

Re: New toy- Sig Mosquito!
Saw someone in there today shooting an auto .22 with a big old sight on top and a rifle leaning on both sides of him. You?

From what I understood - and this is hearsay - is that the trouble with the Mosquito was that the chambers were cut to European dimensions, which are slightly tighter than domestic. Not sure I believe that, but what is a fact is that SIG recommends the use of CCI Mini-Mags in the Mosquito. They used to include an addendum to the owner's manual stating that. They're pretty neat - like a 7/8 scale P226. Have fun with your new toy.

Re: New toy- Sig Mosquito!
I have read so much on this pistol my eyes bleed from the strain. One doesn't like this ammo then another does. Or they like to run wet but this one doesn't. I have two and rules for one doesn't apply to the other. My suggestion is to find what works for yours and stick with it. One of mine jams repeatedlty on minimags but loves Federal Target Match. The other hates everything except CCI standard velocity. Terribly picky and neither function well after a few hundred rounds.

Re: New toy- Sig Mosquito!
i had nothing but problems with my mosquito to the point were it became a single shot gun since i had to rack the slide after each shot the last time i took it to the range. i eventually traded it in at a loss but i was glad to get rid of it. some guys swear by them but mine was the most unreliable pistol i've ever owned. if you have problems make sure you try a variety of different ammo brands in the hope of finding one your gun likes.

Re: New toy- Sig Mosquito!
I do love my mosquito. It's not the most reliable pistol in the world, but it serves its purpose (getting me trigger time cheep). I've found that mine likes minimags (as recomended by sig), cci standard velocity ($25 a brick of 500 at dicks), and federal bulk in the red box from walmart (about $19 a brick of 550). It was hit and miss with win dinapoint GTs... and hates golden bullets from remington. I still want to try automatch (when walmart gets it in stock) as well as a few others.
I have noticed that it doesn't like to be very dirty. I bring a bore snake and a can of 1 shot with me to the range when I'm using it and give the barrel a quick run through every 150 rounds or so (or whenever I start to have a lot of FTF problems). I probably have about 8-10k rounds through it since I purchased it at the beginning of the year (yes I enjoy shooting 22 quite a bit). I only have 1 mag, and I believe that the spring is due for a change... so I need to get a replacement spring and maybe a few more mags (gotta find cheep ones).
The only significant problem that I had was at around 3-4k rounds. I was at the range (trying to shoot those 60 grain ag subsonic rounds) and not having much luck. Later that day (shooting different ammo) I herd an additional click when I pulled the trigger and the gun fired... however on the next trigger pull nothing... it would not drop the hammer from a cocked position (however if I decocked it and shot it DA it worked fine). I ended up going home and completely stripping the lower half to find that the pin that holds the disconnect for the magazine safety had popped out (and was lost). I removed the spring and the disconnect itself... then I cleaned everything really well and put it back together. Trigger pull was both lighter and smoother without the disconnect (so in the long run I'm happy).

Re: New toy- Sig Mosquito!
I have read the the Mag disconnect is the first thing people remove to lower the trigger pull. I have yet to do it.
What are you gonig to buy? Sig plastic Mags or Metal Mags. People bitch about both. All of my mags are metal and had to lightly file some areas on some to get the rounds to flow properly or the slide would not push them forward and out. Plastic I am unfamiliar with but these were praised with helping reduce jams and then later chastized in the Sig forum for causing jams after wear starts.

We have had the sigs in here & they sell themselves! They mold to your hand so easily that you have to take it with you. Anything you get you will hear good & bad stuff about it, but we have not had any come back with any problems, so good luck...glad it found a good home!

Re: New toy- Sig Mosquito!
Sigh. Yeah, I know. Soon, soon.
I know you'll hear good and bad about anything so I just trusted the brand name and the fact that I've never had a problem with any used gun I got from Bob. (BTW, I looked it up when I got home and was shocked to learn that the sight costs more than the gun!) So far no problem with any ammo except the bulk stuff. It came with a metal mag and I bought a spare, which is plastic, so I guess I'll soon see if there's any big difference.
They also include 2 springs so you can adjust to the ammo you're using, plus 3 easily-changed front sights to adjust elevation. Ah, those thoughtful Germans!
Thing about that red dot sight is I can focus on the target and the dot at the same time. I just got the eye fixed and am amazed at the view of the front sight but need to look through the reading glasses to see it, it's just still a hair too close to look crystal clear. But the eye may still be healing so we'll see how it goes.
And I didn't have my one and only rifle with me so it was not me.
