Re: what .22 to get?
Pistol - Beretta NEOS. About $250 and runs anything, all day, with easy breakdown and cleaning, and easy to teach newcomers on. Great pistol.
Rifle - Ruger 10/22. All of the above. Great rifle, plus you can mod it all day long into a million different configurations.
Note to additional posters: He said "decent .22 for plinking, not bullseye accurate and expensive .22s.

Re: what .22 to get?
Take a look at the Browning Buckmark as well. I wanted a .22 with a grip angle similar to my M&P. After reading many reviews/opinions on reliability and longevity (you will almost certainly shoot MANY thousands of rounds through your .22 thanks to the cost of ammo), I narrowed it down to the Buckmark and the Ruger 22/45. I didn't care for the skinny grip on the 22/45 and went with the Buckmark.
For rifles, you can't go wrong with the Ruger 10/22. They've been making them since 1964, so there are lots of excellent used specimens out there. I found a 1977 vintage one with a beautiful walnut stock and a scope for $150.

Re: what .22 to get?
Well,
I purchased a marlin 22 about 4 months ago. It is very hard to get extra magazines and parts.
The trigger is not that great either. It was cheap $149.
If I had to do it again I would get a Ruger 10/22.
There are many parts available and endless support.
If you are getting a pistol, Mark III Ruger

Google GSG 5. You won't want anything else.

Re: what .22 to get?
For pistols, Beretta Neos or S&W 22A
For rifles, Savage Mark II with the Accu-Trigger or the Ruger 10/22

Re: what .22 to get?
Ruger MK III Seems to be the standard entry level target pistol.
I'm torn between that and something that has a body, grip, and controls more similar to higher caliber pistols like the Sig Mosquito and the Walther P22.
Ruger 10/22 all the way for an entry level rifle. If your not in a hurry I see sales of the 10/22 with a cheap scope all the time.
