    Sure.
    No problem.
    Wish you well on your quest.

    Just throwing this out there.
    Not trying to talk you out of a M1 Carbine or anything as they are really sweet.

    Have you looked at and or fired an SKS before?

    I know you said it's for your mom and the SKS has a fairly mild recoil to it.

    I had my daughter shooting one at the time she was getting here license for the first time to hunt in Pa. She would have been 12YO and handled the SKS pretty well. She had a lot of range time before we went out hunting which is the way it should be. Using the 20ga. and here 30-30 deer rifle. But the SKS with it's somewhat short LOP and light recoil as mentioned was just a natural for her.
    Again ... just throwing that out there.

    Jabtime;
    I have to agree that the .22 is the way to go. If she has never shot she needs to shoot a lot. Unless you are rather wealthy, that means .22. While the Ruger is a fine rifle the Marlin 795 is generally available for considerably less. Dicks often has them for a little over $100. Marlin usually has a $25 rebate and Dicks has a $10 discount coupon (both available to be printed off their respective web sites). The rifle, spare mags and a GI sling and I'd upgrade the sights with Tech Sites. You are looking at a great shooter for little over $200. Then you have a rifle that can shoot, you and your mom need to learn to shoot right. Appleseed has monthly classes in Manheim Pa (less than an hour down the Turnpike). Your Mom can shoot for free and it will cost you $65ish. What a mothers day present!!!

    I was just looking at the Autoordenance's web site last night, thinking Paratrooper model would be cool(since I sold my Inland made one way back in 97 to pay for books), but I was told that they are not made to USGI specs. And USGI one aren't cheap like it used to be(I bought my matching #Inland for $250 back in 95. And I bithed how expensive they are!)

    Also I was told that .30Carbine ammo aren't cheap like it once was...

    If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion for your consideration Sir, A Ruger Mini 14 in .223. You can get one used in decent shape for around $450 if you look hard. And .223 is cheap and plentiful, while not long range tack drivers or show case weapons they are nice, reliable, and reasonably accurate. The recoil is nothing to speak of.

    I have an M1 Carbine, Paratrooper model made by inland. Last year I had it re-chambered but still keeping it at .30 carbine caliber due to a headspace problem. It cost a little over $200, and yes I could have gotten a new bolt or re-barrel it but this was the way to go to keep the integrity of the gun and the bbl was in great shape. It's a great shooter now. Just holding the
    M1 Carbine is a great feeling thinking about what these guns have seen and done!

She wanted something a bit smaller and less recoil, so i went to the range, walked in and did the CMP. I shot an M1 Garand and it nearly broke my arm so i put that away. I picked up some ARs and then i picked a M1 carbine back from WWII and i shot it and when my mother came to come pick me up, i let her shoot it.

    Is there any companies out there that design M1 Carbines that aren't all knocked up from past wars?
    Would you care to tell us what range you walked into? And just what was involved in ". . . did the CMP."?

    That might help us to better answer your questions.
