RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING THE PENNSYLVANIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO ACT TO REDUCE ACCESS TO ILLEGAL GUNS
The STUDENTS of Temple University;
WHEREAS, gun violence is a growing problem and public health threat to citizens in our municipality, our region, and across Pennsylvania, threatening families, tearing at the fabric of neighborhoods, and reducing the appeal of our community to homeowners and businesses alike; and
WHEREAS, assaults on police officers – who put their lives on the line day in and day out to protect our community from dangerous criminals armed with illegal handguns – have increased 76 percent since 2002; and
WHEREAS, in those same seven years, 18 law enforcement officers have been shot and killed in the line of duty – more than half of which were murdered using illegal guns; and
WHEREAS, according to the Uniform Crime Report, more than 1,200 people die due to firearms in
Pennsylvania every year, including homicides, suicides, and accidental shootings; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of gun-related shootings and homicides in Pennsylvania are committed using illegal handguns; and
WHEREAS, in a common, illegal practice called “straw purchasing,” individuals who pass criminal
background checks purchase handguns intending to give or sell them to criminals, who are legally prohibited from possessing guns, and who then use these illegal handguns to commit crime; and
WHEREAS, when police discover a handgun at a crime scene and trace it back to the original purchaser, the person frequently claims the handgun was lost or stolen – despite not previously reporting the missing handgun to the police – forcing the investigation into a dead end; and
WHEREAS, requiring handgun owners to notify police when a handgun is lost or stolen can be an important tool to help police identify straw buyers who are trafficking in illegal guns, enabling investigators to crack down on straw gun sales and to stem the tide of illegal handgun trafficking in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, 5,677 guns were reported lost or stolen in Pennsylvania, which represents only a small fraction of the total number of lost or stolen handguns; and
WHEREAS, states that already implement a Lost or Stolen handgun reporting requirement, exhibit a two thirds fewer crime guns traced back to that state; and
WHEREAS, ten cities and towns across Pennsylvania have already passed local ordinances requiring that lost or stolen handguns be reported to the police if an owner discovers his or her handgun missing; and
WHEREAS, those ten cities and towns collectively represent more than two million Pennsylvanians; and
WHEREAS, those local ordinances simply require that a firearm owner report his or her handgun lost or stolen to the police within a short (one to three day) time period after discovering the weapon missing, or else face penalties; and
WHEREAS, these lost or stolen handgun reporting requirement ordinances apply to handguns only and only come into effect upon the discovery of a loss or theft – in no way impacting the rights of authorized citizens to legally own, transfer, or use guns for collecting, sport, or self-defense; and
WHEREAS, on June 18, 2009 the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania upheld the Lost and Stolen handgun reporting ordinance in place in Philadelphia, by citing that gun violence “is a matter of concern in all of Pennsylvania… and the General Assembly… is the proper forum for the imposition of such regulation;” and
WHEREAS, on July 21, 2009 the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County dismissed the lawsuit filed against the city of Pittsburgh for passing a Lost or Stolen handgun reporting requirement, allowing the ordinance to stand, and
WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania General Assembly has yet to pass this common-sense Lost or Stolen handgun reporting requirement into law, ignoring the pleas of mayors, city councils, law enforcement, and citizens – thus endangering the lives of Pennsylvania’s citizens and its law enforcement officers;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Senate of Temple Student Government calls upon the Pennsylvania General Assembly to support state legislation requiring handgun owners to report lost or stolen handguns to the police within three days of discovering the handgun is missing, in order to help police crack down on illegal handgun trafficking and to reduce accessibility to illegal handguns in Pennsylvania.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Senate of Temple Student Government submit a copy of this resolution immediately to the Pennsylvania General Assembly and to the Governor of Pennsylvania with a request that the Legislature and Governor take rapid action to address the epidemic of illegal handgun trafficking in our Commonwealth by passing a statewide lost or stolen handgun reporting requirement law.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a student petition be created to demonstrate student support of stolen handgun legislation,
FURTHER, that this resolution be submitted to the Philadelphia Caucus of Student Governments for further review.

Re: Ceasefire PA has infiltrated Temple University
The above post is what was drafted up by Temple, and Ceasefire PA is asking the same of us here at Drexel. I need the ammunition to tell our University NO!
Please help in any way possible. I can be emailed at CSM605@yahoo.com if you're in the area and you'd like to discuss this matter further.

Re: Ceasefire PA has infiltrated Temple University
It's a shame that they manipulate impressionable and naive young minds to try and further their agenda, even though in reality a bunch of students at a university have no "legal interest" or whatever the term is... (the same reason the NRA's lawsuits get thrown out of court) ...in the situation.

Is there a Students for Campus Concealed Carry branch at the College ? I would get them involved if so. I would also MOST DEFINETLY look up the rules in the student govt handbook and see if you can hang them out to dry on the several lines of that resolution that are intentionally misleading by omitting pertinant facts. Such as the fact the ONLY reason the suits against L&S in Philly and Pitt were dismissed was because of the lack of standing of the plaintiff ( The NRA ) and NOT because the Court found them legal.

Students for Campus Concealed Carry branch at the College ?
You need to find this out.
I am a Drexel Alumni.
You need to contact the NRA.
You need to get the contacts at Drexel University and show education is the need for the education environment.
You need to get students on board.
You need to combat their lie with facts.
Why the need when the law is for law abiding citizens only.
The state law has been effect for how long and no incidents reported.
Do not let them win.
http://www.nraila.org/
You need to get started right now.
I have not been on campus since 2004 and I do not have any pull there.
Contact NRA-ILA and get students on board now. Do not hesitate. As for information from the NRA and A representative to come to the University.

Re: Ceasefire PA has infiltrated Temple University
The very first sentence is BS. A growing problem? Pretty much all statistical data refutes that. Crime in general and I believe homicides have gone down significantly even though gun sales are through the roof.
Didn't need to read any further.
Sadly, the left has been peddling this BfreakingS all my adult life. But using dumbass youth proxies to propagate their lies is pretty much SOP anymore.

Re: Ceasefire PA has infiltrated Temple University
WHEREAS, removing the criminal elements from society and placing them in correctional facilities would negate the need to legislate away the civil liberties of law abiding citizens.
WHEREAS, this will not prevent any criminal from changing his course of action and prevent him/her from obtaining an illegal firearm.
WHEREAS, this will further infringe on an essential liberty and violate the 4th and 5th amendments of our constitution.
WHEREAS, it is already illegal to possess an illegal firearm there is no need to act redundantly and potentially punish individuals who have committed no crime, nor criminalize the victims of criminal activity.
WHEREAS, criminals are not likely to voluntarily participate in a lawful practice of reporting their illegal firearms the majority of information received will be obtained from victims not criminals who are the target demographic of this legislation.
WHEREAS, guns reported stolen will not be returned before their use in a crime negating the need for this legislation.
THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED, that this individual does not wish his civil liberties nor the civil liberties of others to be violated for a bill that serves no effective purpose to limit criminal activity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that, I, as a free member of this commonwealth I do not wish to be forced to do the job of law enforcement unless I am to receive benefits and a hefty pension in return for my efforts.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that there is no need to yell in caps to say "whereas" , "therefore let it be resolved", etc.
FURTHER, let these statements echo and resonate among my fellow gun owners in this state and drown out the voices of irrationality and fear mongers.Last edited by t1m0thy; April 18th, 2010 at 07:26 PM.

Re: Ceasefire PA has infiltrated Temple University
Thanks Tim. This hits close to home.
I am too busy right now to concentrate on Drexel and all of the issue in Philadelphia.
As a Drexel University Alumni I am appalled at this.
I just asked for information to sign in the alumni portal.
I am currently looking for work and it is hard to fight every fight.
This disturbs me greatly because the school I believe in for educating our voting population and leaders of tomorrow is feeding into the propaganda of Cease Fire.
It greatly saddens me to find in a place were education thrives, and science thrives, ideas like more laws, and some how thinking it is ok, will keep them safe and unharmed.
I was mugged at gun point outside my Bottner Dorm in Chester at Widener University 1994. That is how I eventually ended up at Drexel University.
The trigger was pulled twice and they laughed in my face.
The laws are the same now as they were back then, criminals are not allowed to have guns. It is against the law to mug some one and point it on their chin.
Did the law stop them, no.
I simply got lucky or they did not have it loaded and were sickly poking fun.
The FACTS ARE, IF THE COLLEGE PASSES SUCH LAWS IT WOULD ONLY WEAKEN LAW ABIDING COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM BEING ABLE TO RIGHTLY DEFEND THEMSELVES WHEN CAMPUS SECURITY IS MOMENTS AWAY OR (SLEEPING IN THEIR CAR NEAR THE TENNIS COURTS AS THEY WERE IN MY CASE)
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE COLLEGES PREACH GUN SAFETY AND HAVE SHOOTING TEAMS.
Knowledge is power, education is power, and so is being able to defend yourself.
THIS FRUSTRATES ME TO NO END.
I have just found another outlet for my idea. The college campuses in the city of Philadelphia need to be included
SOTR, JD, Crlovel etc.. you know what I am talking about.Last edited by thefirstndsecond; April 19th, 2010 at 11:36 AM.

Re: Ceasefire PA has infiltrated Temple University
I have emailed Chris the following information provided by the NRA-ILA.
http://www.nraila.org/Issues/Article...=260&issue=003
http://www.nraila.org/Search/?q=carry%20on%20campus
I have requested Chris's information and sent him the NRA-ILA contact information.
I have asked that a representative from the NRA-ILA, Gun Owners Of America, or some one from Students for Concealed Carry on Campus to show up when Drexel has a meeting. This issue must be discussed.
I left Widener in 1994 because I was held at gun point. It was illegal at that time for me to be armed, (under age) and not allowed to have a weapon of campus.
It was also illegal for them to be armed, but that did not stop them.
Chris, I will help do what I can.
